Outstanding Success at STEMWA MiniROV Challenge as Year 8 Team takes 2nd place!

Our Year 8 team, “The Nerds,” achieved an incredible 2nd place finish at the STEMWA MiniROV Challenge, held at Garden Island. This achievement was the result of weeks of commitment to an afterschool cocurricular project, where students invested significant time and effort to prepare for the competition.

The MiniROV is a small, remote controlled submarine designed to mimic real world underwater robotics. Students built their ROVs from the ground up, assembling parts and soldering wires with precision. Each team also created a display highlighting their build process and research into industries where remotely operated vehicles are essential such as offshore energy, marine exploration, and environmental monitoring.

On the day, teams completed several underwater challenges with their MiniROVs, delivered a presentation to judges and participated in an interview at their trade display. These tasks tested not only technical skills but also communication, research and teamwork.

Our two Year 7 teams also impressed with their perseverance and creativity. Despite challenges like wire breakages and battery mishaps, students demonstrated resilience, problem solving skills, and incredible support for one another throughout the day.

It was a terrific day out at Garden Island and we couldn’t be prouder of the commitment and innovation shown by all our teams. Congratulations to everyone involved!
