Our Year 7–9 students embraced the challenge of big ideas and deep thinking at the Junior Thinkers Conference, engaging with thought provoking questions, lively debate and philosophical inquiry.
Attending the Junior Thinkers Conference at Perth Modern School was an outstanding opportunity for our Year 7-9 students to immerse themselves in philosophical inquiry and intellectual debate. Throughout the day, students demonstrated curiosity, maturity and a willingness to engage with complex ideas, representing our school with distinction.
The conference programme was led by Dr Julie Arliss, an expert in Religion and Science who has lectured at Oxford University. Students were challenged to think deeply about some of humanity’s most enduring questions through stimulating lectures exploring What is the soul? and What are the origins of the universe? These sessions encouraged students to consider a range of perspectives, drawing on scientific, philosophical and religious viewpoints while developing their critical thinking skills.
A highlight of the day was the opportunity for students to participate in a Community of Inquiry focused on the concept of moral luck. Through thoughtful discussion, students examined the extent to which individuals should be judged by outcomes that may be influenced by factors beyond their control. The level of insight and respectful engagement displayed by our students was particularly impressive as they explored challenging ethical questions and listened carefully to the ideas of others.
Students also took part in an energetic and thought-provoking debate on patriotism. They confidently articulated their views, considered opposing perspectives and demonstrated excellent reasoning skills. The debate provided a valuable opportunity for students to strengthen their public speaking abilities while developing a deeper understanding of civic responsibility and national identity.
Throughout the conference, our students embraced every opportunity to contribute, question and reflect. They approached each activity with an open mind and a genuine desire to learn from both the presenter and their peers.
The Junior Thinkers Conference was a highly enriching experience that challenged students to think beyond the classroom and engage with important philosophical and ethical issues. We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 7-9 students represented our school and the positive contributions they made throughout the day. Their outstanding participation highlighted not only their academic potential but also their readiness to engage thoughtfully with the complex questions that shape our world.
