Book Week is the one time of the year when books take centre stage in such a visible and festive way.

This week, our School was alive with stories, colour and creativity as we celebrated Book Week 2025 under the theme “Book an Adventure,” embarking on a journey into the joy of reading books.

The adventure began with a House Buddy Reading session at lunchtime on Monday, where Senior students shared stories with our Junior students. It was a heart warming way to launch the week, with older readers guiding younger ones on magical journeys through the pages of favourite books.

Throughout the week, students continued to book an adventure in different ways. In Year 5, classes enjoyed Book Tasting sessions, where students sampled a smorgasbord of books, sparking fresh excitement about reading new genres. Mrs Morphew’s Year 6 class took on the challenge of a Library Scavenger Hunt, racing to solve clues and uncover treasures on the shelves.

A major highlight of Book Week was the chance to meet two inspiring Australian creatives in the world of children’s literature. First up was James Foley, who entertained Years 1, 5 and 6 with hilarious stories of how he became a writer, keeping everyone laughing while he sketched wacky new characters alongside favourites from his books. Our Year 1 students were especially delighted, thoroughly entertained, and left with a spark of inspiration to create their own stories.

On Thursday, Gavin Aung Than captivated Years 2 to 4 with interactive sessions that had students volunteering eagerly to help him create live comic drawings. He explained where his story ideas come from and brought the art of storytelling to life before our eyes. Gavin also judged the colouring competition, awarding well deserved book prizes to creative student artists.

Of course, Dress Up Days across Tuesday and Wednesday were the week’s crowning moments. At both the Calista and Wellard Junior School assemblies, Miss Bright announced the Children’s Book of the Year Award winners, along with our Book Week Decoration Awards. Congratulations to Kindergarten and Class 4R, whose colourful hot air balloons celebrated the adventures book can carry us into. Commendation prizes were also awarded to many creative individuals. The Junior School Parades filled the stages with beloved storybook characters, from wizards and wild things to superheroes and fairytale favourites; a magical celebration of the joy that books bring.

The lunchtime Senior School Parade was equally vibrant, with Moortang Mia buzzing with excitement as students showed off their costumes. The energy was electric as book voucher prizes were awarded to Senior students with the best costumes, celebrating the effort and enthusiasm on display.

Congratulations also go to the winning classes of the Book Week Quizzes: 11 Laurence and Classes 2D and 5C, and to the Senior student team who triumphed in the Student vs Teachers Book Trivia Showdown, a true victory for readers everywhere!

The effort from students, staff and parents to make costumes, decorations and celebrations possible is always worth it for it reminds us all that great adventures can often start with the turn of a page.
