On Wednesday, 30 July 2025, the Peter Carnley Anglican Community School came together in a moment of deep significance and spiritual joy to commission Father Raphael Beuthner as the new School Chaplain.
The Keith Lindbeck Centre was filled with reverence, music and unity as students from Years 2 to 12, staff, families and invited guests shared in this heartfelt service led by The Most Reverend Kay Goldsworthy AO, Archbishop of Perth.
The ceremony began with a warm welcome from Principal Ms Felicity House, who addressed the assembly with words of greeting and gratitude. Archbishop Kay then came forward to lead the service in prayer. “Alleluia,” the Archbishop praised, noting it was the very word Ms House had echoed when Father Raphael accepted his place at PCACS.
A poignant Acknowledgement of Country reminded all present of the sacred land on which we gathered, followed by a reading from Romans by The Right Reverend Hans Christiansen, reflecting the diversity of gifts each member brings to the community.
Archbishop Kay’s reflection on the call to ministry prepared hearts for the central moment: the Commissioning of Father Raphael. With care and symbolism, students, staff and special guests presented sacred items, a Bible, Cross, Chalice, Holy Water, Prayer Book and Candle, each representing the Chaplain’s role in guiding, nurturing and walking alongside the School community. At each presentation, Father Raphael responded with humility and promise: “I will, with God’s help.”
In a moving gesture, the School Roll was handed to Father Raphael by the Head Boy and Head Girl, symbolising his pastoral care for every student and staff member. A candle bearing the School crest was presented by Ms House, representing the values of Spirituality, Excellence, Respect and Belonging, commitments Father Raphael has now formally embraced.
The School choir lifted their voices in the hymn Colour of the Day (Light Up the Fire), filling the space with warmth and light. This was followed by a powerful rendition of Champion by Bethel Music, performed with heartfelt passion by Year 12 Students Jacob Bryan and Makaila Remo. Their voices echoed the vibrant joy and hopeful spirit of the students as they celebrated the commissioning of their new Chaplain.
The Licence of Ministry was read by Archdeacon Justine Coverdale, after which Archbishop Kay formally presented Father Raphael to the School, greeted with warm applause.
The Reverend Peter Laurence, CEO of AngliSchools, welcomed Father Raphael with a blend of warmth and humour. Smiling, he noted the significance of Father Raphael’s name, shared with the Archangel Raphael, the angel of healing. This thoughtful connection set a gracious and uplifting tone, highlighting the meaningful role Father Raphael was about to undertake within the community.
The Service was a harmonious blend of prayer, music and hymn, featuring participation from students across multiple year levels. Concluding with a final blessing and recessional as the School Hymn resounded. Under clear skies, the official party gathered outdoors for a final prayer, a fitting close to a day marked by faith, community and joyful purpose.
Father Raphael begins his Chaplaincy supported by a deeply grateful School community. May his ministry at PCACS be one of light, encouragement and lasting impact.
