From the Principal

Ms Felicity House

ATAR exams are in full swing, the new student leaders for 2023 have been announced and the Prefects are already busy taking on their roles. Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten 2023 Orientations are scheduled and the Transition Days for Junior School and the 2023 Year 7s will be held next week to introduce the students to their new classrooms, staff and experiences. The end of year events and Christmas are fast approaching. Term 4 will be a busy term!

ASC Board Visit

The Chair, Mrs Lynne Thomson and CEO, The Reverend Peter Laurence brought members of the ASC Board to tour both Calista and Wellard Campuses last Tuesday. For many, it was their first visit, with others seeing Calista for the first time. Those who were more familiar with the school noted the transformation of the Wellard campus with the design of the Hub, and location and design of the Chapel. We hosted lunch in the Grace Chapel. They were very impressed with the growth of the School and the energy and vibe.

2023 Student Leadership

The Student Leader Announcement Assembly held last week brought the Junior School and Senior School together to announce our student leaders for 2023. The School Prefects were announced along with the Junior School Captains. We are blessed with potential leaders and the selection process was a difficult one. I thank all the candidates for putting themselves forward and acknowledge the students who missed out on a role for the dignity and grace with which they handled the news. Several of our Prefects spent a day at the WAASA Leaders Day. Archbishop Kay Goldsworthy challenged them to think deeply about leadership within an Anglican School. Leadership activities and meaningful discussions with fellow leaders across WA Anglican Schools made the day a rewarding one.

The 2023 Student Leadership team are:

Head Girl - Stephanie Beaumont Cabrera
Head Boy - Byron Silchinger
Deputy Head Prefect - Ada Isidienu
Deputy Head Prefect - Felix Abbott
Service Captain - Tashinga Chipfunhu
Arts Captain - Sophie Hall
Chapel Captain - Jeren Calingasan
Laurence House Captain - Abbee Zikali
Lindbeck House Captain - Lisa-Rae Maplanka
Moody House Captain - Blake Pratt
Murray House Captain - Hannah Pearson

I am very impressed by the ideas and inspiration these students bring to their roles. I wish them well as they take on their new roles. Please find the list of Junior School Captains here

The Hub is soon to be officially named

The Hub is now well and truly in action. I have been working with the School Council to appropriately name this building. A Naming Ceremony is planned for Monday 21 November. In the meantime, the students are enjoying using all of the spaces. The café is offering breakfast, recess and lunch services. The Library staff have settled all the books and resources upstairs. The auditorium has been used for the Staff Wellbeing Day, Staff PD, incursions, drama and music classes as well as meetings. TIDES has found the classroom to be very conducive for their work. The covered areas for students to enjoy lunch, recess and class activities show how well the building has been designed. The IT Tech Support, Maths Department and Director of Pastoral Care are now in their offices. The students appreciate the outdoor furniture donated by the P&F. This building has added so much to the life of our School. The official name has been designed around the connection of the original buildings and the connection of students as they use this beautiful building.

Consider our neighbours

We ask that all families abide by the road rules and be mindful of where they drop students off, particularly in areas marked with solid white lines. This includes along Wellard Road and down Meares Avenue. For the safety of your child, please use the Kiss and Go within the School grounds for Junior School students, or for Senior Students, pull into the Wellard Oval carpark and the students can exit the vehicle safely and walk down the hill.

Outdoor Rec Camp

I was thrilled to join the Year 11 Outdoor Recreation students for abseiling at Wilyabrup.  They have been enjoying themselves at camp in Margaret River this week. Activities included a bush tucker tour, caving, walking a section of the Cape to Cape and canoeing. Camp experiences at PCACS are designed for collaboration, team building and growth of leadership skills. The next camp will be the Year 9 Rite Journey Camp.

God bless.

Junior School Updates

We are on a momentous and exciting trajectory toward the end of the school year. The students and teachers are working hard in the classrooms. There are also a series of wonderful events happening across the year levels.

Outdoor Learning

On 3 November the Calista students enjoyed Outdoor Classroom Day by taking their learning outdoors. What an adventure of learning they had. Fortunately, we were blessed with beautiful sunshine which made the day a whole lot brighter too. Well done Calista students and staff!

KSSA Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to our team of Year 1 to Year 6 students who represented our school at the Carnival. There was amazing comradery across the KSSA schools, and our students represented PCACS with enthusiasm, pride and dignity. Thanks to Mrs Chapman and Mrs Bowdler for preparing our students for the Carnival and to Mrs Jones, Mr Morris and Ms Cobain for assisting on the days.

Transition Day – Friday 11 November

Transition Day provides the opportunity for students to receive a ‘taster’ of what next year may bring. Each class spends a lesson in the year level above.  Additionally, there is a big focus on supporting our Year 6 students moving to Senior School and the Year 1 children transitioning to Wellard Campus.

On Transition Day the Year 1 students will spend the entire day at Wellard Campus and the Year 6 students will spend the day in Senior School. Details of these arrangements have already been emailed to families.

The 3 Day Kindergarten children are invited to join Transition Day between 9.00am – 9.50am in the Pre Primary. A separate email has been sent to the families about this.

On Transition Day we also welcome our 2023 Kindergarten children and their families for Kindergarten Orientation.

Transition Day on Friday 11 November is a very exciting day ahead. I anticipate this will be a productive, informative and fun day for everyone.

Booklists 2023

In Week 7 the Booklists for 2023 will be issued to families. The procedures will remain the same as in previous years for Wellard Campus, with each Year 2 – Year 6 Booklist containing a list of compulsory stationery items that each child must have for 2023.

There will be a new arrangement for Calista families which will bring financial savings to families. The Pre Kindergarten to Year 1 Booklists have a compulsory stationery amount to be paid to Campion via the online link provided on the Booklist. The stationery items will then be sent directly to the classrooms. This is a more convenient and cost-effective arrangement for families. The information below outlines the reduced cost this new arrangement brings for Calista families.

The success of the new arrangement for the Calista campus will be reviewed during 2023 to determine the feasibility of it continuing into the future and for older year levels adopting the same procedure.

I wish everyone a wonderful, safe fortnight ahead. God bless!

This week our talented musicians performed in the Music Eisteddfod. I was lucky enough to watch the voice students sing some beautiful songs. Congratulations to all our music students who performed.

Next week we will commemorate Remembrance Day on Friday 11 November. There will be a service in the KLC to honour the service and sacrifice of thousands of young Australians. Outdoor Classroom Day 2022

What a treat it was to be a PCACS Calista student on Wednesday 3 November! Every class was involved in Outdoor Classroom Day. This is a global event where intentional learning is set outside the classroom. Pre Kindergarten even had a sneaky peek the day before so they didn’t miss out. Fortunately for WA we had sensational weather that allowed for Art and RAVE to be outside, as well as Sport and classroom time. It was a hive of activity as staff walked around the campus. There was drawing, bubbles, water play, potions made in the mud kitchen and café, bikes, scooters, totem tennis, painting, chalk work and a lot of natural maths activities. ‘Can you find me three sticks? Which one is longer? Which one is the shortest?’

When teachers take learning outdoors they report some powerful impacts: Children’s behaviour improves, whole classes are excited to learn, and individuals who feel inhibited by the curriculum often thrive in an outdoor environment.

When adults think back to their own happiest memories of childhood, they frequently recall the joy of playing outdoors. Play is not only central to children’s enjoyment of childhood, but teaches critical life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork and creativity.

How lucky we are to have such wonderful educators!

Making Reading Remarkably Rewarding

This term in Year 2 – 6, the Junior School have introduced a reading engagement programme called Renaissance. Research suggests that if students are engaged in reading for pleasure, we see improvement in their literacy skills, general knowledge, understanding of others and creativity. Based on Renaissance assessment results, students are provided with a levelled category that reflects their abilities and interests. With students already so excited about the opening of the new school library, they can now independently search for books within their personalised reading range. In addition, their results link to a digital library called Myon, as well as a digital quiz and incentive function called Accelerated Reader. When visiting our amazing school library on a weekly basis, all students are expected to bring their library bag and participate in borrowing and returning to promote reading for pleasure.

Champion of Champions Athletics

On Friday 28 August a select few Junior School students represented PCACS at the Champion of Champions Athletics event held at the UWA athletics track. Students entered their strongest events and competed against some of the best young athletes in the state. Congratulations to Luke Peters (6H), Keira Peters (4D), Cienna Shepherd (6C), Max Morphew (6C) and Evie Commons (4D) who performed extremely well against strong competition. Notable results were achieved in Year 4 girls shotput where Keira finished third, Year 6 girls shotput where Cienna finished second, and Year 4 girls turbo javelin and Year 4 girls 1500m where Evie finished third in both events. All students should be proud of their dedication and work ethic in their athletic endeavours as these wonderful results are a representation of the many hours they spend striving to improve themselves.

Well Done!

Year 10 Drama - Peter Pan

As a part of the Year 10 Drama curriculum, students rehearsed and refined a class production of 'Peter Pan'. The students then performed for the Year 2 cohort, who had also been delving into the world of Neverland, in the first ever performance in the new Drama Room. Thank you to the Year 10 students for their hard work and dedication. They should be extremely proud of their achievements.

Year 10 Italian

Year 10 Italian Speaking Assessment - Topic: The Environment

Year 10 students had to create a board game. Anna, Charlette and Piper created Jenga with wooden blocks that they made in the woodwork room. Sam and Christopher made a monopoly game. Emily made a round the board type game. The theme was Environment. The aim was to play the game in Italian while trying to speak in Italian, vocabulary was given. We invited Felix Abbott in Year 11 to join us.  All students gave this their absolute best and we had some very enjoyable sessions playing the games. Students were assessed on the games, the rules of the games written in Italian and how well they attempted to speak in Italian. We all realised how difficult it was to speak in Italian at all times but we certainly gave it our best!
