From the Principal

Ms Felicity House

The wet weather has not dampened our spirits in this event-filled term. Our students have been enjoying challenging and inspiring activities both at school and further afield over the past fortnight. Highlights include Edudance, RAC road safety workshops, abseiling at Woodman Point for our Outdoor Rec students, Food Science students enjoyed a Foodie Tour of Fremantle, whilst Italian students visited the Rockingham foreshore. Our gifted and talented students have been representing PCACS in the Da Vinci Decathalon, Water Corp Think Tank Challenge, IPSHA Academic Challenge and the future Voyager students spent the day together completing a series of activities for selection into the Voyager programme for 2023. Our School Mission is to challenge and inspire every member of our school community and to raise awareness of those who live in need beyond our gates. We certainly have been expressing the PCACS mission in action this term.

Operation Op Shop

Today we raised awareness of those in need beyond our gates with the annual Operation Op Shop seeing a parade of fabulous Op Shop outfits and generous gifting through donations and items for resale at op shops. We even had our own soup kitchen. The focus of fundraising is to support the life changing work of the Anglicare most particularly the Street Connect Bus. Tonight, forty brave students and staff will join Australia’s biggest sleepout with the annual Anglicare sleepout held at Optus Stadium. The students will explore scenarios faced by homeless people and will be sleeping on the cold concrete promenades of the stadium to glimpse the challenges faced by homeless people in WA. If you would like to make a contribution online please follow this link https://www.anglicarewaschoolsleepout.org.au/t/team-peter-carnley

Last week our Anglicare Ambassadors visited the Anglicare Op Shop Warehouse to gain insights into their services. There is much need in our community and I thank our students and families for their generous support. Thank you to our Service Learning Coordinator, Mrs Katie Frampton for organising these significant service learning experiences.

Life in Grace Chapel

Students from Year 2 to Year 12 have delighted in the new Chapel, with Chapel Services held last week for both Junior and Senior School. It has been wonderful to talk to the students about the design, purpose and life of the Chapel, and heart-warming to hear the commentary from students and parents about the building and the peaceful, quiet surrounds.

The All Saints Kwinana Anglican Parish have now relocated into Grace Chapel. Church Services are held in Grace Chapel on Sunday at 9.00am and on Wednesday at 9.00am in the Chapel of All Saints which is a small chapel inside the main building. Parents and families are welcome to attend these services.

Busy, Busy Term 3!

The busyness has already hit us. The past fortnight saw Junior School students competing in interschool events such as Da Vinci Decathlon, Australian Maths Competition, KSSA Cross Country, and the IPSHA Academic Challenge. Congratulations to the students and staff involved who proudly and confidently represented PCACS.

The Calista Campus has been busy with Edudance occurring each Monday and incursions such as the Kindergarten Introduction to Road Safety. These special events hugely enhance the ‘PCACS experience’ for Junior School students.

What’s Coming Up?

Next week is Science Week and the following week is Book Week, so we can expect a lot of excitement over the next fortnight for Junior School.

On Tuesday 16 August, Oz Wildlife will be visiting our Kindergarten to provide first-hand experience of Australian animals and how to protect them. On Thursday 18 August, all Year 6 students will participate in the KSSA Winter Sports Carnival. I wish them all the best.

Week 6 is packed full of Book Week events, including special assemblies, dress up parades, excursions and incursions. Also in Week 6, the Kindergarten to Year 1 students will travel by bus on Thursday morning for the whole school 15th Anniversary photographs and to attend a short service in the newly opened Grace Chapel. This will be an exciting opportunity for the Calista children.

Grace Chapel

We held our first chapel services in Grace Chapel in Week 3. Grace Chapel has afforded us an opportunity to reshape the services to increase student participation. Mrs Lynne Hart, 6H, the Chapel Monitors and Mrs Lucy Roberts are thanked for setting the tone for how chapels will be run from now on.

Sustainability

Mrs Lynne Hart, Mrs Emma-Lee Jackson and Miss Grace Richmond have been working very hard behind the scenes to source grant funding to improve our waste-sorting practices at each campus. They have amazing ideas about introducing worm farms, composting and garden beds, and the students are getting excited about this too!

I hope you have a wonderful fortnight during this busy time of the year.

I wish you joy and peace. God bless!

Grace Chapel comes Alive

Over the past two terms, the Junior School has watched in anticipation as the Grace Chapel arose from the ground. Many of the students have been excited about what it looks like inside and wondered about when they would be allowed to use the space. Well, on Wednesday this week, Junior School Students and Staff finally entered the Grace Chapel for our first Chapel Service for Term 3.

Prior to our first service, students from Year 2 to 6, have been learning about how to conduct themselves in the chapel, with the focus being on respecting the sacred space and showing reverence during our services.

This week, students from 6H read from the Book of Genesis, and presented a drama explaining how God creates everything to be unique and individual. Students also joined in singing “Hooly Dooly, Wap Bam Boo (Jesus Christ is Coming Soon)”, and filled the Grace Chapel with a chorus of happiness and praise. Thank you to the parents who attended, and we look forward to seeing many more attend in the future.

TIDES News

On Wednesday 3 August, PCACS played host to the Water Corporation Schools Think Tank Challenge. We welcomed teams from Northam SHS, Fremantle College, Mother Teresa Catholic College and Fountain College in a spirited, but collaborative, competition to identify opportunities relating to WA’s water supply and management. PCACS fielded two teams, one from Year 9 and the other from Year 10 and drawn from expressions of interest made through the TIDES program.

The event was the second major partnership with external organisations to provide opportunities for our students to engage in meaningful design-thinking and innovation strategies over the past week.

The event was facilitated by Mr Nate Sturke from Skills for the Modern Age, and students needed to develop a viable solution to an opportunity relating to water and sustainability. Special thanks to Milvia Daniels and Tanya Burnett from the Water Corporation for working with us and trusting us with the responsibility of hosting this important event in WA’s innovation agenda.

After a few hours of working through the design-thinking process, teams gathered to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges from the Water Corporation. I’m very pleased to report that the two teams identified to proceed to the final event in October were Northam SHS and PCACS TIDES Year 9 team.

The team members – Blake Brown, Tianna Brown, Caitlinn Fallon, Alyssa Lucken, Lily McGavock, Tatenda Mukwada, Benjamin Phillips, and Olivia Walters – decided on an interesting and overlooked area within the agricultural industry.

The judges acknowledged that the ideas from both successful schools were areas that had not been considered previously by the Water Corporation and were considered to be very realistic, innovative and viable possibilities.

The team from PCACS will join the finalists from other heats held around WA at the Water Corporation headquarters in Leederville on 21 October  when they will pitch their fully realised idea to a judging panel that will include Mr Pat Donovan, CEO of the Water Corporation, and Hon. David (Dave) Joseph Kelly MLA BA, Minister for Water; Forestry; Youth.

It has been very pleasing to see the enthusiasm and willingness to participate and grow so significantly since the inception of the TIDES program last year. In 2021 fewer than 20 students nominated themselves for particpation in this type of event. This year we have well over 100 students from Junior and Senior School participating in a variety of academic and innovation events.

I would remind families to keep the Arts and Technology Sundowner date in mind (16 September) as an opportunity to see all the TIDES projects represented alongside all the creative work from Arts and Techology areas across the school.

Senior School Sports Carnival

The wait is almost over; next Friday 19 August, we will see Senior School students throw, run, jump and cheer their way through the day at the Senior School Interhouse Athletics Carnival.

We are hoping that the weather is fine and the day goes ahead as planned. Any changes to the carnival programme due to weather will be communicated to parents as soon as practical.

Parents and spectators are welcome to come for one event or stay the whole day to see students competing and enjoying the carnival atmosphere.

The first events will commence around 9.00am. Parents should refer to previous SEQTA notifications for the link to the programme of events and additional details.

Don't forget to support our wonderful P&F who support us on the day with canteen facilities. They would appreciate any support from volunteers who wish to spend a few minutes or a few hours assisting with their service.

I hope all students attend the day and show high levels of House spirit by participating in events and supporting others who participate. Remember, every athlete earns points towards the carnival total. Good luck to everybody.

Only 7 more sleeps!

PCACS PLAYERS EXCEL AT HOCKEY

In the last newsletter, I reported that Jaskiran Kaur of Year 7 was selected in the School Sport Western Australian Girls U12's State Hockey Team to play in Canberra.

As that newsletter went to publishing Jaskiran was informed that she had made selection in the next age group of players for a Hockey tour group representing WA to tour Fiji in December. It is an amazing achievement to be named in one State Representative team but to hold two positions in two different age group teams is astounding.

We wish her all the best for both of these competitions.

Bryson Sweetman played in the State School sports 16's competition in Hobart between the 29 July - 8 August 2022. Other teams in the tournament were from ACT, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania. The boys played well throughout the tournament and ended up playing off for the Bronze medal. However, they were unlucky with a 1-1 draw and lost due to countback, so the boys placed 4th out of 7 teams. The experience was great and he got to see Tasmanian devils close up at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary on the excursion morning. We were also lucky enough to get to see snow at the top of Mt Wellington and had a team snowball fight.

The commitment required to maintain Year 11 studies and manage training and playing at this level is enormous.  Congratulations, Bryson.
