Welcome to our New Head of Junior School

Our new Head of Junior School Mrs Shirley Steel has been embraced by our Junior School this week as she takes on her role as the Head of Junior School.  We have had the opportunity to welcome her at both the Calista and Wellard Chapel Services and at the Maggie Dent Seminar.  She has spent time in classrooms getting to know everyone, and the Junior School Athletics Carnival provided a wonderful opportunity for Mrs Steel to meet parents and see our delightful students in action.  Mrs Steel brings with her a wealth of experience and she believes in creating a safe learning environment where students build self-belief, think big, work hard and contribute to their communities.  We wish her all the best as she takes on this role.

Welcome Mornings

We welcomed many new families to our Open Mornings at both Calista and Wellard last week. It is always a pleasure to see these families admiring of our buildings and the creative work going on inside them. We are currently finalising Kindergarten placements for 2019 so if you have not yet applied for younger siblings, please ensure you contact us as soon as possible. If you know families who may be interested in gaining a place at PCACS, please encourage them to visit our website and to attend a Welcome Morning.

ASC Biennial Schools Week

This week sees all 14 schools of the Anglican Schools Commission come together for a week of rehearsals to prepare for a Concert at the Perth Concert Hall on Friday 7 September. The ASC Schools Week Liturgy was held in St George’s Cathedral on Wednesday 5 September with our Head Boy, Brock Molloy reading the Gospel. This was a joyous event bringing student leaders, Principals, Chairs and senior staff together.  Thank you to all the students, led by Ms Alicia Walter for all the hard work they put into preparing for the concert.

ASC Aspiring Leaders

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting the ASC Aspiring Leaders. 25 staff from across the WA ASC Schools met at PCACS to hear about our School and things we have been doing. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our School. The topics covered were Leadership Lessons from the Principal, the Senior School Positive Behaviour Expectations and Awards system by Adam Halliday, whilst Ross Griffin and Donna Farmer presented the work we have done to support the Bintang Timur School in Bali.

Senior School ACC Athletics Carnival

This year saw our Senior School students elevated to F division in the ACC Athletics Carnival. The level of competition throughout the day was fierce, with only a few points between second and fifth for most of the day. Swan Valley put on a very impressive show during the relays to bump us to fifth position late in the day. Our team were a credit to the School and themselves. Their level of support for each other was a delight to witness. Strong performances from our younger competitors places us in good stead for 2019. Congratulations to Declan Ryan and Nathaniel Hutton who placed first in their respective age groups, and to our Senior Boys for winning the shield. Full details can be found in the Sports News section of this newsletter.

ELC Tabloid Sports

The oval was transformed into a sea of parents and early learners for the ELC Tabloid Sports last Thursday. Our Calista Campus students came over to Wellard to run and play for the afternoon. It was great to see so much support from family and friends cheering their young ones on. The determination and enjoyment on the faces was a delight to see.

Parents and Friends

There was a wonderful turnout for the Father’s Day Campout last Friday night. Thankfully the weather was much kinder for those braving the night compared to 2017. The ‘tent’ city on the oval was spectacle to behold, with many dads and father figures enjoying the bonding time with their kids.

Maggie Dent presented Real Kids in an Unreal World, giving our parents and other members of the community some insightful and useful advice about introducing small changes that will make a big difference in your child’s life and suggestions on helping to develop your children into healthy, happy resilient and kind people.

Thank you to Clarissa Thomson and her hard working P&F team for the opportunities they are giving to our PCACS families. Without this band of determined parents these events would not take place or be as successful.

Junior School Athletics Carnival

Wellard oval was a hive of activity on 7 September with our Year 3-6 students participating in the Junior School Athletics Carnival.  The enthusiasm and sportsmanship was wonderful.  Thank you to our Physical Education staff who make these events run so smoothly and to the P&F for running the canteen.  Photos will be available in the News section of our School website very soon.

IT & Operations - Mr Shane Parnell

Chinese International Study Group

Recently the School hosted 7 students from Hangzhou China for a 2 week Study Tour. The students joined in with a variety of Junior School classes and were buddied up with PCACS students. Their buddies helped and assisted them over the time and really made them feel part of our School community.  It was fantastic to see the Chinese students getting involved in our brilliant Book Week parade and Junior School Athletic events.

Sadly, we had to farewell our new Chinese friends and it was wonderful to hear them talk about their time at PCACS and how much they enjoyed our School and Community. I would like to thank all the teachers and students for welcoming our visitors with open arms and to everyone who helped make their time at our School and enjoyable and valuable experience.

Sport News - Mr Roh Weddikkara

This year’s ACC Interschool Athletics Carnival was held on Tuesday of Week 8 at the State Athletics Stadium.  After last year’s success we moved up to F division, our aim this year being to consolidate our position as we knew it would be a tougher opposition this time around.

The weather didn’t look promising and was cold and very wet in the morning; however, the squad of 80 year 7-12 students braved the conditions and performed extremely well.  Each member made a valuable contribution to the team and competed to the best of their abilities.  It was also fantastic to see the great support each other gave and the sportsmanship our students displayed to other Schools.  We finished the day in a very respectable 5th position, one which we can be very proud of and work to improving on next year.

Our Senior Boys (Years 10-12) were our best performers winning their category. Congratulations to the following students on outstanding individual achievements:

  • Declan Ryan (1st place) -  Open Males
  • Esther Qua Qua (4th place) -  Open Females
  • Charis Kingston (4th place) - Under 13 Females
  • Briah Atkins (4th place) - Under 15 Females
  • Nathaniel Hutton (1st place) - Under 15 Males
  • Dylan Sibanda (3rd plac -  Under 16 Male

Congratulations to all students who competed as well as a big thank you to, Mr Halliday, Mr Radulovic, Mrs Layman and Miss Sangalli for their help on the day.  We also had 9 student officials who assisted, and did an outstanding job.

RKAS Sport

This term’s RKAS sport has now finished, our Year 9 and 10s were very competitive in their Soccer and Netball competitions. Our Year 9 Girls Netball team finished 3rd, our Year 10 girls finished 3rd and our Year 9/10 boys Soccer team finished 2nd.  Thanks to our coaches Mr Radulovic, Mrs Barrett and Mrs Ward as well as our umpires Eloise Bowen, Claudia Howatson, Shriddhi Ghimire and Damian Tasovac.

Next term is Super 8s Cricket for our Year 7 and 8 boys and Basketball for our Year 7 and 8 girls. The season starts in Week 2 of next term so I will be going around in the coming weeks to tutor groups to seek nominations.

PCACS Netball and Basketball

We are at the business end the season with our Netball and Basketball teams. Good luck to all teams who have reached the finals and congratulations to all the other teams for a fantastic season. We will no doubt hear about how our teams fared in the coming newsletters.  I encourage as many people as possible to go down to Mike Barnett Stadium and cheer our teams on.

ACC Super Series

This will be the third year that PCACS will be entering the ACC Year 7 Super Series.  We will be entering a girls Netball team.  We have selected a strong group of 10 girls after a series of trials who will now train with coaches Mrs Barrett and Mrs Trent ready for the carnival next term.  Thanks to all the girls who came to the selection trials and good luck to our team.  The competition will be in Week 2 of Term 4 at the State Netball Centre.

ELC Tabloid Sports Carnival

Last Thursday, the Early Childhood students participated in their Tabloid Carnival.  The weather, although a little chilly to begin with, remained fine and sunny for the whole afternoon.  The event was exceptionally organised by Miss Lisette Wheatley and the day was thoroughly enjoyed by students, teachers and parents.

The afternoon commenced with the Kindergarten, Pre Primary and Year 1 students arriving at Wellard campus via the bus.  This, in itself, was a very exciting event!

Firstly, the Kindy and Pre Primary students completed their running races and then moved on to completing their rotations, which included the Vortex Throw, the Flag race, the Egg and Spoon race, the Sack race and Tunnel Ball.   The Year 1 and Year 2 students started their day with their rotation activities and finished off with their races.  The students displayed great enthusiasm, sportsmanship and excitably cheered on their peers.

It was wonderful to see so many parents, grandparents and other family members come along as spectators, cheering the students on and sharing in the joy of the day.  Thank you to everyone who made this day a success; spectators, teachers and students. I hope you all enjoyed the day as much as I did.

P&F News

Hello Parents and Friends,

The P&F has been very busy so far this term and last week we were able to host the very popular dad’s camp out.  With around 60 families attending the event, we all had a very good time eating pizza, toasting marshmallows on the fire and kicking the footy around.  The weather was much kinder to us this year, although it was still a little cold but all in all everyone enjoyed themselves.  We are very thankful to MP Mr. Reece Whitby who donated a wonderful hamper full of lots of goodies that we were able to give away to one very lucky dad!  We look forward to repeating this event again next year.

We also hosted a morning tea in conjunction with the ELC and Junior school Book week.  Parents were able to enjoy a warm drink and a yummy treat while they watched the children parade around in their wonderful costumes all to music.  It was such a fun and exciting event for all involved.

We welcomed Maggie Dent on Thursday 6 September to our Calista Auditorium.  Maggie presented very thought-provoking content with the theme of the evening, Building Resilience and Self Esteem in Young Children.  It was well received by the parents and staff in attendance.

As previously advised, a new date for the quiz night has now been set for Saturday 20 October 2018. New flyers will be coming home shortly.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.trybooking.com/WZTF.  There are table tickets available but we will also have single tickets for those who would prefer.  There are tons of amazing prizes up for grabs so be sure to book your babysitters and grab your ticket today.

Looking forward to seeing you all at an event soon.

PRESIDENT

Book Week Success

Book Week was a hub of activities and fun this year.  Throughout the week Junior School took part in many Book Week activities in their classroom and during their library session.

Visiting Authors

The week started with Children’s Book Author Raewyn Caisley.  Raewyn’s two picture books ‘Hello from nowhere’ and 'Something wonderful’ have both won awards from the Children’s Book Council of Australia in 2015 and 2017. Raewyn ran literacy workshops with our Year 3 and 4 students.  The students were taught that writing a story was like a hamburger.

The top of the bun is the introduction to the story
The hamburger is the body of the story
The bottom of the bun is the conclusion
and the lettuce and gherkin are the twists and turns in the story.

Raewyn inspired our students to write about their life experiences and to use lots of interesting describing words in their stories.

Wendy Binks was such a hit with our students last year that we invited her back again this year for Book Week . Wendy is a West Australian Author and Illustrator who has sold over 120,000 copies of her book ‘Where’s Stripey’. This year Wendy presented workshops to our Pre-primary, Year 1 and 2 students. The students enjoyed listening to Wendy and were shown how to draw Stripey from basic shapes. Many students were also given the opportunity to draw their own stripey.

Many students also purchased signed copies of Raewyn Caisley and Wendy Bink’s books.

The Preloved Book Sale

The students and teachers were encouraged to bring in a couple of preloved books from home and donate them to our Preloved Book Sale.  This event is a great way to promote literacy and raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.  The event for staff and students ran for two days and raised $231.  The ILF will use this money to purchase literacy material for children in remote areas of Australia.

Book Week Dress up Day

What better way to finish up Book Week than for Junior School students to dress up as a book character for the day.  The students and staff had so much fun and the variety of book characters and the costumes were great. Each campus showcased their book character outfits with a parade.

Horses at McDonalds?

Byford’s newest fast food outlet received a welcome visit from two very unique customers last week as two horse riders saddled up for a snack.

Amanda Worthington and Georgina Clarke mounted their horses and walked through the Byford McDonald’s drive thru on Saturday morning, surprising staff on their first day at work.

Georgina’s mother Joanne Clarke said the staff were surprised to see the furry customers appear at the pay window.

“The staff said obviously they wouldn’t encourage it but they were glad we put in the correct safety measures to make sure the public and the riders were safe,” she said.

The Byford fast food establishment on Thomas Road and Kardan Boulevard officially opened the doors to its 24-hour restaurant on Saturday.

2018 Pierre de Coubertin Award Presentation - Madison Good

Pierre de Coubertin was the founder of modern Olympics and was convinced of the importance of sport in the development of the individual.  He believed in the qualities of excellence, sportsmanship and respect which embody the values of Olympism.

The Pierre de Coubertin Awards, an initiative of the Australian Olympic Committee, are designed to reward not only the elite sports people but those that display strong character and ideals, representing the school at the highest standard both on and off the field.

Previous Western Australian winners of this award include Fergus Kavanagh (Olympian, Hockey), Kim Mickle (Olympian, Athletics), Harry Taylor (Geelong FC) and Daniel Wells (North Melbourne FC).

The Awards are held annually in each state (except NT) and are presented to one Year 10, 11 or 12 student from participating High Schools.  In WA in 2018, The Australian Olympic Committee awarded 43 students from among the approximate 16,000 students attending those participating High Schools.

Congratulations to PCACS Year 10 student, Madison Good, who was selected as a recipient of this award.

Of the 43 students, 33 students and their families attended the State Presentation Ceremony held in Perth.  The students were invited to an Olympic Academy Day held prior to the Presentation Ceremony, which provided students with a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about leadership, goal setting and resilience from some of WA’s Olympic heroes. Olympians Jesse Phillips (Sprint Kayak); Tamsin Cook (Swimming); Danielle Kettlewell (Synchronised Swimming) and Rhys Grant (Rowing) shared with the students their own Olympic journey.  The students also learnt about the Olympic movement and toured the Western Australian Institute of Sports high performance facility.

Emcee, Olympian Jesse Phillips who has attended multiple Pierre de Coubertin days, said he is grateful for the opportunity to meet students and foster their spirit for personal excellence.

“The students receive an insight into the whole Olympic Movement. The journey is much bigger than just what you see at the Olympic games every 4 years. It is an ongoing journey with many obstacles, setbacks, hopes and dreams to represent our Country”.

The students were thrilled to meet some of their sporting heroes and among them was Olympian Lauren Mitchell (Gymnastics).  Her message was threefold:

  1. Discover your Why - What do you want to achieve?
  2. Control what you can, such as the preparation not the outcome
  3. Change the language, create positive dialogue and set small challenges on the journey to achieve your ultimate goal.

"It was fantastic to speak to the students and their families today, I love sharing my story and the process of how I achieved my goals to hopefully inspire them to achieve their own".

Australian Olympic Committee WA State Manager Lisa Lilleyman acknowledged the great support from schools throughout Western Australia for the Pierre de Coubertin Award, with nominations received from metropolitan and regional schools including Albany, Geraldton and Christmas Island.

“We are thrilled so many wonderful WA Youth could be recognised for displaying the Olympic Values and their commitment to excellence in all areas of their lives.  We are pleased so many could join us for the Academy Day and continue to be inspired by our Olympians”.
