Outstanding Achievements

History was made last week as we received our first ACC Letterman Award. Director of Sport, Associated & Catholic Colleges of WA, Mr Kyle March, attended our Senior School Assembly to accolade Year 10 student Madison Good for achieving the ACC Letterman Award.  To reach the heights of Letterman status, a student must make an ACC All star Team four times throughout their time in Senior School, within the same sport. Madison has reached this status in Cross Country, reaching top 3 at the ACC Cross Country Carnival in four consecutive years. With up to 350 participants competing in each race, ACC Cross Country has the largest number of competitors of all sports played in the ACC.  As the very first PCACS student to receive this honour, we are overjoyed by Madison’s achievement. Her hard work and mentorship of younger students is a credit to her.

Following this presentation, Mrs Melanie Hunt (Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator) awarded Year 10 student, Jordan Foyle and staff member Mrs Amber Wesley with Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards (DOE). These Awards are awarded to people between the ages of 14 and 25 with Mrs Wesley just sneaking in before her 25th birthday.  The DOE Award is a leading structured youth development programme, empowering all young Australians aged between 14 to 25 to explore their full potential regardless of their location or circumstance. The Award is a fully inclusive program and has no social, political, or religious affiliations.  To earn an Award, each young person must learn a skill, improve their physical well being, volunteer in their community and experience a team adventure in a new environment. All Participants are supported by a network of adult Award Leaders, Assessors, Supervisors, and mentors.

Samoa

Bishop John Parkes, Bishop of Wangarratta has inspired the ASC to explore a Service Learning partnership with All Saints School in Apai, Samoa. I had the privilege of a joining group who travelled to Samoa to consider the viability of a partnership between our schools. Mrs Weddikkara, our Service Learning Coordinator joined the group who visited All Saints School in Apia, spending time with the students and teachers. The School is the only Anglican School in Samoa and currently has around 120 students, predominately in early learning and junior school. The Principal and Parish dream of growing the school to accommodate senior students in the near future. The purpose of the trip was to reach out to All Saints and to explore opportunities to support the School in the coming years. Spending time with The Archbishop of Polynesia, Winston Halapua was a joy as he shared his reflections on the meaning and purpose of life. He reminded us that we all bring our individual skills and weave them together to make our village. I look forward to sharing more news with you as this partnership evolves.

Anglicare WA School Sleep Out

On Friday 3 August, 14 of our students and 6 of our staff congregated at Optus Stadium with other Schools from throughout WA to participate in the Anglicare WA School Sleep Out. In its third year, this is Australia’s biggest Youth Sleep Out.  The students were briefed on homelessness within the community and then went on to experience a series of activities to illustrate the challenges faced by the homeless. Although it may seem glamorous to sleep in the stands of Optus Stadium, the students will tell you how cold and hard it was to sleep on the concourses on a stormy

winter night. After a soup kitchen dinner, the students lived through being woken regularly and moved on from location to location, a reality for the homeless every night. Thank you to Mrs Weddikkara and Mr Dewhurst for preparing the students, together with Mrs Farmer, Mr Dods, Mrs England, Mrs Morton who volunteered to share the experience with the students.

The Archbishop, Kay Goldsworthy, was impressed with the strong support from PCACS. Thank you to all those who supported Anglicare by donating money to the participants. Collectively the schools raised funds for Anglicare to continue its vital work to support homeless and provide avenues for care, shelter and employment.  Congratulations to our PCACS Team for exceeding their fundraising target.

Parents and Friends

Our Parents and Friends are a small dedicated group of parents who organise events to enhance your experience at PCACS. With a number of items on their calendar this term, it would be wonderful to see some new faces join us and volunteer to assist at these events. If you are able to spare a few hours, please contact the P&F on pcacspf@gmail.com

Coming home soon will be a copy of our new Parent Code of Conduct. The partnership between home and School is vital and this Code sets out the expected behaviour and practices for all parents and carers.

PCACS Cubs Playgroup

This Semester we have started a small playgroup at Calista Campus.  This is designed to allow the siblings of current students access to our learning environment in preparation for when they commence Kindergarten.  It has been a pleasure to see the current children attend playgroup and already starting to establish some friendships and confidence in the classroom.

The playgroup currently runs every Wednesday from 8.45am to 10.30am in the Kindy Swans classroom.  This is run by parent volunteers who set up activities in the morning and manage the routine throughout the session.

Some of the benefits of siblings attending the PCACS Cubs Playgroup are:

  • Developing familiarity with the environment through use of current kindergarten classroom and playground
  • Feeling safe and supported as they attend with their parent or carer
  • Learning to follow classroom routines
  • Social interaction with others of a similar age
  • Making friends with children they will be attending Kindergarten with
  • Allowing for a smoother transition when commencing Kindergarten.

Parents pay a small fee of $2 per week and this cost goes towards tea, coffee, biscuits and some craft resources if required.  All children attending the playgroup must have a sibling that currently attends PCACS.

If you would like further information on our PCACS Cubs Playgroup, please contact the Calista Campus.

Science Alive Incursion

National Science Week runs from 11 to 19 August.  To commence our celebration of all things Science and to raise awareness of Science Week, we had a Science Alive Incursion.  This was held at Wellard for the Year 4 to 6 students and at Calista for the Kindergarten to Year 1 students.  All year groups were presented with a science show that supported the curriculum they are covering this term.  There were many 'oohs' and 'ahs' by students, and teachers, throughout the shows and there was certainly a lot of excitement generated.  Mick, the host of the shows, delighted the students with his experiments and props and shared his vast knowledge of science with the students.

The Years 2 and 3 will be having their Science Incursion during Science Week.  I can’t wait to see what they get up to!

Senior School Awards System

At the commencement of Semester Two, we will be implementing a new Senior School Award System which will recognise our first group of award recipients at the Senior School presentation ceremony at the end of Term 4.  The Senior School Award System is designed to recognise excellence, achievement, contribution and high behaviour standards within our School community.

The Award system places an emphasis on students celebrating each other’s successes, which will in turn motivate students to strive to achieve their best.

The awards system is divided into four award categories including:

  • Academic - Outstanding achievement in the majority of Learning Areas in the Year report
  • Sport - Commitment and high achievement representing the School in a range of sporting competitions, including but not limited to - Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, RKAS Competitions, ACC and other Sporting competitions
  • Cultural - Commitment and excellent performance in School cultural events, including but not limited to - School musical, choir, band, and art exhibitions
  • Citizenship - Outstanding commitment to the School’s core values, making a positive contributing and service to the school and wider community in a range of activities and events.

Students are then able to achieve different levels of Award in each of these categories.  The award levels start at a Distinction award and progress to Half Colours, Colours and ultimately an Honours award level.  The expectations increase for each level of award, with students required to build on their achievements, contribution, high behaviour standards and leadership as they progress over time from one award to the next.

To be considered for an award, students will need to refer to the Awards document, which can be found on SEQTA to determine whether they meet the criteria for each award before submitting their nomination.  The Academic awards don’t require a student nomination as they will be awarded to students based on their academic results for the year. Students who submit a nomination form and meet the criteria will be awarded a badge and certificate at the Senior School presentation ceremony each year to recognise their achievement.

Book Week 2018

What’s happening in Book Week?

Book Week is celebrated throughout Australia from Monday 20 August to Friday 24 August 2018.  The theme for this year is Find Your Treasure. During the week Junior School students will participate in activities focusing on reading and engaging with books and other reading materials.  During library sessions, the students will explore this year’s winning books chosen by the Children’s Book Council of Australia.

Visiting Authors

The school is very privileged to have two well-known WA Children’s Authors visit during the week.

Raewyn Caisley will be conducting workshops with our Year 3 and 4 students. Raewyn is the author of 2 very popular picture books, Hello From Nowhere and Something Wonderful.  The students will be given the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of these books.

Wendy Binks will be back with us again for a second year and will be conducting workshops for Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2.  Wendy is a well-known WA Author and illustrator who is known for her book Where’s Stripey. This book has sold over 100,000 copies and won The Western Australia Premier Book Award. Signed copies of Wendy’s books will also be available.

Second-hand Book Sale

On Thursday 23 and Friday 24 August the library will be running the Second-hand Book sale, formerly known as the ‘Great Book Swap’.  This will take place in the Wellard Admin Seminar Room.  Students are encouraged to take a look at home and bring to school a couple of pre-loved, good condition books that they would like to donate. For the Wellard campus, these books can be taken to the student’s class or dropped off at the school library.   For the Calista campus, a box has been provided in the Calista Admin foyer.  The Second-hand Book Sale will be open to sales lunch-time and after school on the Thursday and the Friday at Wellard (All Calista families are invited to attend after school).  The majority of books will be $1 each.  This is a great way to promote literacy to the students at our school but also to assist in remote communities. All money raised will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to enable them to purchase reading material for children in remote communities of Australia.

Book Week Dress-up Day

As part of the celebrations Junior School will be participating in a Book Week Dress Up Day on Friday 24 August.  Students are invited to dress up as a character from their favourite book.  Costumes should not cause a financial strain on families, the students have been encouraged to recycle, reuse and repurpose items.  Costumes must be appropriate for school and cannot include any weapon or inappropriate item (toy swords etc.).

The students are encouraged to bring in a book that their character comes from, or a print out of what the book cover looks like.

A parade of the costumes will take place at 8.45am in Calista Playground and at 9.30am in the Junior School Courtyard.  Parents are welcome to attend.

Scholastic Book Fair

In Week 2 the library hosted the Wellard Scholastic Book Fair.  We were given a good selection of books, stationery and posters, and as always the Junior School students were eager to participate.  Students from Years 7 to 9 were also given the opportunity to come across to the Book Fair during their English classes.

Year 6 students volunteered their time to assist with sales before school, lunch time and after school. The students were an asset to the smooth running of the book fair.

Year 12 students enjoyed the experience of dressing up in the Clifford the Red Dog outfit and mingling at the book fair with the Junior School students while they wrote their wish lists.

This event was a great success with a revenue of $6186.  The school library will be given $1800 commission to purchase resources.  A huge thank you to the parents who purchased a book from the book fair as a donation to the library.

Service Learning at PCACS

Discover Samoa

At the heart of service learning is the concept of ‘come as guest’, where we look at entering communities to walk alongside people, learn from them, provide service to them and, ultimately, to create lasting relationships as equal human beings.

Recently, Ms House and I had the exciting opportunity to be a part of a delegation of Anglican Schools Commission (ASC) Principals, Deputy Principals, Chaplains and Service Learning leaders to Samoa where we spent 5 days discovering the beautiful people, geography and culture.  The central mission of this trip was to seek out service learning opportunities for our students and to begin a relationship with the Anglican Church and All Saints Anglican School.  This partnership is very much in its infancy; however, the potential for growth is extraordinary.

At the School we were welcomed by the staff and students through song and dance, not dissimilar to what children would relate to seeing in the film ‘Moana’.  The pride the students have in their culture, their families and their upbringing is inspiring.  We were spoilt with amazing hospitality and warmth, and the School was very excited about our students visiting in the future to work alongside the Samoan children.  There is no doubt that our students would benefit just as much as the children in Samoa, if not more, through this partnership.

As well as service opportunities, there is also great potential for study tours for students to learn more about the author Robert Louis Stevenson (author of Treasure Island), history and geography of the country, marine biology, as well as the Christian values and beliefs that underpin everything in Samoa and are very much a part of everyday life.

This is the beginning of a very exciting and positive partnership and although there is a lot of work to be done, I look forward to sharing more as the  process continues on how our school can support All Saints Anglican School and how our students can be involved in the combined ASC trip to Samoa in the years to come.

Anglicare WA Sleep Out

On Friday 3 August, 14 Year 9 to 11 students and 6 staff joined 220 other students from Anglican schools in sleeping out at Optus Stadium to raise awareness of youth homelessness and funds for the Anglicare WA Street Connect Bus.  The Street Connect Bus helps homeless youth make positive life choices and help them to reconnect with society as well as source employment, homes and resources.

I was overwhelmed and inspired by our students who reached out to family and friends to blow our target of $1500 out of the water and raise $4,906!  This is an incredible amount of money that will go a long way to helping the homeless situation in Perth.  The students should be so proud of their efforts.  Thank you to all who donated to this worthy cause.  The whole event raised close to $69,000; all money goes directly to the running of the Street Connect Bus.

Annelise Morton, Year 10:

The Anglicare WA School Sleep Out 2018 was a major eye opener for me along with many other people who attended.  I chose to participate in this event to have an insight into how many people live every night all around the world.  I couldn’t believe how realistic this event was.

We all took part in simulation events where we were put into a certain homeless person’s position which was very confronting.  The simulation events were very frustrating as we had to go back and forth to each station because they would either be closed for lunch, there would be a queue or they had misplaced our forms. This made the simulation activity very irritating.

Afterwards we all raced to get the best spots to sleep the night.  It was freezing cold so we rushed to the warmest spots possible with our piece of cardboard.  After we set up for the night we got a small cup of cheese soup which wasn’t too bad but I definitely couldn’t have this meal every night for dinner.

Lights out were at 11:00pm even though no one could sleep because of the continuous noises, weather, lights and many other distracting events that occurred over the night.  This is when one of the girls that we were bunking with received a move on notice for throwing objects around the stadium.

In the early hours of the morning we had alarms go off for about 5 minutes straight which woke everyone up, we also had people walking up and down the corridors all night with speakers playing barking dog noises.  After this we had volunteers come up to us and tell us to grab the sleeping bags and pillows of the people across from us and we were then asked to throw them down into the stands so that they couldn’t find them.

I would definitely take part in the sleep out again and I would strongly encourage all of the senior students to get a group of friends together and do it as well.

Dakota Franz, Year 11:

I chose to be a part of the Anglicare WA School Sleep Out as not only was it a fundraising event but also an amazing opportunity to participate in a simulation to feel the many emotions hundreds of young Western Australians endure every day and night.  Through the simulated activities, I was able to gain some perspective of the life of a homeless person and the challenges they have to face on the streets.  One of the activities we took part in was the “Scavenger Hunt of Life” and this really was an eye-opener as the ‘actors’ treated us in the way that the homeless would be treated.  It made me feel hopeless, as though I had no one to look out for me and assist me in my hardship.

I would love to be an ambassador for this event and many more like it and encourage the rest of the PCACS community to take part in such a wonderful and life changing experience.

Kalahni Best, Year 11:

I've been wanting to take part in the Anglicare WA School Sleep Out since I first heard of it last year as I've always wanted to have the experience of sleeping rough on the streets like so many young people my age have to do it every night without a choice.

I learnt that a lot of the time services aren't very helpful and often refuse the homeless certain resources because of one reason or another.  It's very hard to get much help when you don't have the basic necessities such as identification.

During the night when we got asked to move on as we were in a spot that was a "safety hazard" I was a bit upset as we had been there the whole night and didn't realise that the lights would be on all night so once I got comfortable and they asked me to move on I wasn't pleased.  Just as I was getting to sleep we got woken up and told to go away for 5 minutes. We didn't know what was going on and when we returned our sleeping bags were gone.  By the time we were allowed to get them I was freezing and couldn't get warm again.

I now have a lot more empathy for those who have to go through this every single night.  I also feel like I am able to share the experience of homelessness without talking over others’ experiences now that I've been a part of this Sleep Out.

P&F News

Hello Parents and Friends,

Term 3 is a very busy term for events and the P&F have been working hard planning lots of fun activities for PCACS families.

The first on our agenda is supporting both the Senior and Junior Sport Carnivals.  The P&F will again be running canteens at the Wellard Oval Pavilion, with the Senior School sports carnival being held on Friday 17 August 2018 and the Junior School sports carnival being held on Friday 7 September 2018.  As always, we welcome any contributions from families of baked goods that we can sell to hungry athletes on the day.  Donations can be dropped off at Student Services between 8.00am and 8.30am.  We would prefer that you donate items in a disposable container, but if that’s not possible, please ensure that all containers  returned are clearly labelled with your child’s name and class.  We are also looking for volunteers to help out in the canteen, so if you can spare even an hour on either day, please email us at pacaspf@gmail.com.

We are also very excited to join in on the Book Week fun this term.  All ELC and Junior School students at both campuses will have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite literacy character and participate in a Book Week Parade.  The P&F are excited to provide parents who plan to attend on the day with a morning tea to warm up while we wait for the festivities to commence.  Our event is open to parents and friends from both campuses and we hope that Calista parents will also come along and see us once the ELC students have completed their parade.  There is no need to book for this event, just come along on Friday 24 August in the Y02 Hub at Wellard Campus from 8.30am.

And last but certainly not least is the return of the very popular Dads Camp Out. This year we will be camping out on Friday 31 August 2018.  Families are invited to come along dressed in their favourite footy gear and pitch a tent on the oval at Wellard Campus. Tickets are just $20 per family which includes dinner and breakfast.  We will have plenty of activities and games happening on the night.  Families are welcome to bring along snacks and drinks for the tent as well as a ball to kick around if they wish.  Limited spaces are available and tickets sold out very quickly last year so make sure to grab yours early!  Tickets can be purchased online only at www.trybooking.com\XKUA from 8am Wednesday 15 August until sold out.

For those wondering about the quiz night, we have postponed this event to Saturday 20 October 2018.  More information and ticket sales will commence soon but in the meantime, be sure to book your babysitters and start forming your teams now.

Looking forward to seeing you all at an event soon.

Year 6 Poetry

In Year 6 last term, we analysed, created, edited and published various types of poetry. There was a high level of creativity in all three classes. Each week we highlighted one particular student who became our ‘poet of the week’ for their high work ethic and level of creativity. Their work was displayed in the classroom for everyone to read and enjoy.

We would like to share these pieces with our community so you may also read and enjoy them.

Student Achiever - Livvie Walters (Year 5 Mc)

Congratulations to Livvie Walters (5Mc) who brought home trophies from the annual WA Model Railway Exhibition held at Claremont Showgrounds over the WA Day long weekend in June. Hosted by the Australian Model Railway Association (WA), the event has model train enthusiasts of all ages showing off their layouts to a crowd of over 7,000 visitors over the three days.

After buying a Hornby train set for her eighth birthday, Livvie has been busy building her 1.8m x 1.2m OO gauge layout (dubbed ‘Meowingtons Junction’ after her love of cats) for the last three years and thought it had reached a stage where it was good enough to exhibit.

Livvie was correct about it being good enough, claiming the Encouragement Award trophy for ‘Best Newcomer’ exhibitor and then the coveted ‘Most Popular Layout’ voted for by the several thousand visitors to the show.

Interestingly a volunteer on one of the competing exhibits was none other than PCACS Chair of Council Mr Jeremy Ludlow. We do hope Mr Ludlow voted for Livvie’s layout!

Well done Livvie.
