Week 9

As Term 2 comes to a close, we look back on all the events, activities, learning and fun we have had this term. Since the last newsletter our students have been on Year 11 Camp, participated in the ASC Piano Competition, visited Parliament House for Year 9 Civics Excursion, our Year 4 students have walked to Calista to visit with their buddy classes with time spent exploring the Kwinana Adventure Playground. Currently our Years 11 and 12 VET students are completing their Skillhire Work Experience. We have held Parent/Teacher Interviews at Wellard and Calista Campuses for all of our Junior School and Early Learning students this week. These interviews, in addition to School reports, have provided parents with the opportunity to explore their child’s progress this semester. As the holidays begin, I would encourage all families to consider technology free time, and look for opportunities to read, play and venture outside.

Saying Goodbye to our Head of Junior School

How do you say goodbye to someone who has led the Junior School for 8 years? This is a question we faced early this term when Mrs Dunnill gave notice that she would be leaving us at the end of the term. Through a series of assemblies and staff farewells, we have captured the essence of Mrs Dunnill contribution to the School and what she has meant to us. At Calista, we heard words of praise from our youngest learners. At Wellard, we paid tribute through words, gifts and song. Mrs Dunnill joined PCACS in 2010 at a time when there were 380 students in the Junior School. Since then, the Junior School has grown to 617 students across two campuses. We are indebted to Mrs Dunnill for her strong leadership, wisdom and vision for the Junior School.

Staff News

With Mrs Maggie Dunnill, Head of Junior School, finishing at the end of Term 2, some temporary changes have been made within the management structure of the Junior School. Miss Kierin Janes will be stepping into the role of Acting Head of Junior School, whilst Mr Ross Griffin will be moving into the position of Acting Director of Upper Junior. I look forward to announcing the new Head of Junior School early next term.

We say goodbye to Miss Lawrenson and wish her well on her move to Sweden.  We say goodbye to Mrs Shannon Grant and Mrs Rhiannon Chapman as they focus on impending parenthood. Mrs Lucy Hall will take well deserved Long Service Leave and Mrs Wendy Simms finishes her contract in the Administration.

We welcome Mrs Helen Berlingieri into the role of Lab Technician and Ms Christine Pacey to our team of Education Assistants. Miss Angela Ridge will join Year 1 from the beginning of Term 3 and Mrs Debbie Bull has been appointed to Year 3.

Holidays

I wish all our families a restful and enjoyable time during these School holidays.  I look forward to seeing everyone back next term, refreshed and ready for Semester Two.

Head of Senior School…..link up

We are all looking forward to a mid year break after a very demanding semester’s programme at PCACS.  I hope students plan a well-earned break full of balanced activities that include family time, reading, outdoor activities and spending time with friends.  I encourage students to limit social media and computer games during these holidays.  Keep safe and revitalise to tackle the final stage of this year at school.

I wish all staff a restful break and thank each one of them for their contributions throughout Semester 1.  I look forward to a successful and positive final semester when you return.

Year 10 Focusing and Exploring

The time is approaching for Year 10 students to select their courses for Year 11 2019.  The preliminary stages for this important decision began in Careers and students have been open minded about the key information offered to them and have asked relevant questions so they can make the best choices for the next few years.

The Parent Information Night will be held on Tuesday, 24 July in the Keith Lindbeck Centre commencing at 6.00PM and concluding at 7.00PM.  Please put this important information evening in your diary.  More details will be sent to parents / carers early in Term 3.

Semester 1 Reports

Parents / carers can access their child’s Semester 1 report on SEQTA at the end of this week.  If you require a hard copy of your child’s report please contact the School Administration.

Year 11 Course Changes

Year 11 students considering any course changes for Semester 2 must make a time to meet with Ms Stringer, as all changes must be completed by the end of this term.  Parent permission will be required to make any changes.

Careers Expo Years 10, 11 & 12

A Careers Expo was held at PCACS today to give all students up to date post school information about an assortment of future career choices.  Representatives from Universities, Health Industry (Nursing), Hospitality, Construction and the Army, Navy and Air Force presented a comprehensive overview of career pathways, application processes and scholarships as well as any financial support available.

Students took advantage of the opportunities to ask questions and to gather some relevant materials to help them with their future choices.  It was great to see parents take up this invitation to attend to this worthwhile event.

Our thanks to Mrs Russell for organising the guest speakers and I am confident that the students gained valuable insights during this event.

Farewell Mrs Dunnill

I wish Mrs Dunnill so many blessings and goodwill as she leaves our School community.  Mrs Dunnill’s many contributions have helped shaped PCACS into the well-respected and key educational player it is today as an Anglican School in the surrounding area.

I know that opportunities will find Mrs Dunnill and the following quote says it all.

“If you’re brave enough to say goodbye, life will reward you with a new hello.” Paulo Coelho

Parents are welcome to contact the School for further information.

God Bless

Lapathon 2018 - Mrs Maggie Dunnill

LAPATHON 2018

Such a great achievement - the Junior School raised $10,000.

What a wonderful afternoon we enjoyed on Founders’ Day – so many students walking and running, so many parents, so many pushchairs, so many Grannies and Grandads… When a community works together, we can make a big difference to ease the lives of others.

Thank you so much to everyone for your kindness and support.  The teachers at Bintang Timur School in Bali are overwhelmed by your ongoing generosity.

Peter Carnley ACS has helped to grow school buildings, to provide students with much needed uniforms, to increase the indoor and outdoor resources for teaching and learning, to facilitate the teachers’ professional development, to teach the students English, and so much more…

These are mighty acts of care and kindness.  Thank you all for your involvement and your achievements.

Mrs Maggie Dunnill

Year 3 Baldivis Children’s Forest Excursion

As part of our Science and STEM unit this term, the three Year 3 cohorts visited Baldivis Children’s Forest on Tuesday of Week 8.  Built by the community, the forest opened in 1982 and has been used as a centre point for environmental education for the past 18 years.  The students took part in a rotation of three activities, which included Cubby Building, a Wetlands Critters Search and a Forest Exploration Expedition.  Each activity focused on building creativity and resilience in a natural bush setting.

For the teachers, a highlight of our day was joining each group as they sat together to eat lunch in their cubbies, which were made from basic materials provided for them by the natural surroundings.

ASC Piano Competition

On 20 June, 10 enthusiastic pianists from both the Junior and Senior School, travelled to Peter Moyes ACS to participate in the sixth annual ASC Piano Competition.  Over 160 competitors from the ASC Schools came together to compete in six categories before four specialist adjudicators. The morning saw 13 heats from which 26 finalists were selected for the afternoon finals concert. The adjudicators spoke to the students about the importance of presentation in performances, along with the need to spot check their music in practice to ensure they know it thoroughly.  Congratulations to all the students involved for their confident and well-prepared performances, and for the professional manner in which they represented the school. Thank you also to our piano teachers, Mr Tony Celeberti and Mrs Marjolein Morhoof, for preparing the students for the competition.

Careers Expo at PCACS

The 2018 PCACS Career Expo took place in the UCA on the morning of 26 June, when Years 10, 11 and 12 students listened attentively to representatives from a variety of organisations. This year’s presenters were from Murdoch and Notre Dame Universities, South Metropolitan TAFE, Hospitality Group Training, Building and Construction Industry Training Fund and Defence Force Recruitment.

Students were provided with information on courses offered, application processes, both direct and alternative entry, where they could study, be it in WA or beyond, how tertiary education works and where to find further help. Beyond this, they were offered glimpses of personal career stories, first hand experiences from a Murdoch Nursing student, advice on identifying skills they already have that could be the basis of future career choices and options for opening their minds to careers they may not even have though of by considering their current interests. They even discovered there were options for being paid while you study via industry apprenticeships or Defence Force Careers.

Following the presentations, students had the opportunity to speak directly to the representatives and ask more personal, specific questions and to take away information to consider and follow up later.

We offer our sincere thanks to the organisations and their representatives who attended the Careers Expo; every student left armed with much more information than they came with and the seeds of new ideas planted in their minds.

Year 5 'Walk and Talk'

On Friday 22 June, the Year 5 students walked to Henley Reserve.  They participated in a walk and talk with the City of Kwinana's resident bush tucker and plant expert, and had the opportunity to do some planting of plants and trees appropriate for the reserve. The students enjoyed getting their hands dirty, and learning about some of the wildlife in our local area.

A big thank you to the City of Kwinana, Mrs Weddikkara, and our parent helpers. We look forward to paying a visit again in Term 3, to check the progress of our trees.

Year 11 Camp

Week 8 of Term 2 and the Year 11s were off to camp. The camp took a different format to previous years by covering a range of both cultural and physical activities.

The first day took us into Perth by train in order to visit Parliament House. While one group was observing how our government works, another was visiting the Kings Park State War Memorial and learning a little of WA’s military history. The groups then swapped so everyone shared these experiences. The afternoon was taken up with a guided tour of the WACA, during which we visited press

boxes, the Donald Bradman Room and even got to walk onto the pitch and see the WACA from the cricketer’s perspective.

Wednesday was a trip to Fremantle, where we tested our teamwork skills at Escape Hunt, took in some maritime history at the Shipwreck Galleries and spent the afternoon discovering the cultural heritage and history of Fremantle on a walking tour.

Thursday and Friday were back to traditional camp activities as we took off to Manjedal and tested our confidence and fitness across a range of physical activities. From laser tag, where Mrs Russell discovered she’s a better target than sniper, to the Flying Fox, where Mrs Piccirillo had at least as many goes as her students, via High Ropes where Mrs Rupke showed her cool head for heights and the Confidence Course where the competitive natures of Mr Dukic and Mr Carman on behalf of their Houses came to the fore, students joined in and tested themselves mentally and physically.

A tired but accomplished group arrived back at school Friday afternoon; each with a personal first, or best, and knowing and understanding each other better. Many thanks to the students who embraced the week with enthusiasm and to the Tutor teachers who not only made it run smoothly, but brought their individual enthusiasm and sense of humour to make it a memorable week.

Co Curricular Term 2: Tournament of Minds Mock Challenge

Tournament of Minds is a critical and creative thinking programme that allows students to work together as a team to solve a problem. Every Wednesday after school, a group of enthusiastic Year 4, 5 and 6s came together to research, prepare and present a dramatic performance showcasing their solution to a problem. Using humour and accents, Team Blue explained how they would move the iconic Australian emu to Sweden and Team Yellow discussed the pros and cons of moving Mount Rushmore to France. Next term, the teams will be given a new challenge and will present their solution at the Tournament of Minds Regional Finals at ECU Joondalup.

Emotional Literacy Academy

Healthy development of our children is unquestionably one of the most important things on a parent’s mind - with all the hustle and bustle of the modern-day life, how could their child possibly develop additional emotional intelligence skills?

Thankfully, there is a place that combines emotional literacy and the science of mindfulness; a place that has been developed specifically for children from age 5 to 9 years and it's in Perth! The Emotional Literacy and Mindfulness Academy for Children is driven to encourage children to be become aware of their emotions how to manage them and how to understand others. By giving them the tools to strengthen their emotional skills, and social development, a child can become actively involved in their emotional drivers, and therefore be best positioned to flourish later in life. The July Course is currently taking enrolments with limited spaces available go to www.emotionalliteracyacademy.com for more.
