Term 1 draws to a close.

An eleven week term pops up every once in a while, and as this one draws to a close, it seems lucky that we had an extra week to fit in so many marvellous experiences.

We began with the Induction of our Prefects and House Leaders, shortly afterwards announcing our Student Councillors.  The Peer Support Leaders have been actively mentoring our Year 7 students including attending the Year 7 Camp at Swan Valley Adventure Centre.  The Year 5 and Year 9 students also went on their adventure based camps, coming back with stories to tell and new friendships made.  The P&F Disco and Dance party brought many fine dance moves to the Under Cover Area.  Swimming was a highlight through our House carnivals, followed by admiral placings at the Inter School ACC and KSSA carnivals, where records were broken and PBs smashed.  It was with great delight that we welcomed The Most Reverend Kay Goldsworthy AO, Archbishop of Perth, to Bless and Dedicate our Calista campus in March in the presence of all our Kindergarten to Year 1 students. We celebrated cultural diversity through Harmony Week at Calista and Wellard.  The Senior School students wrote anti-bullying pledges as part of “Bullying No Way Day”.  Easter fell within term time, allowing deep exploration of the story of Easter.

This week the Year 6 students will sleep over at the Calista Campus, enjoying time to bond as a year group whilst participating in challenging and fun team activities.  All these activities and so much more have been shared via our new website and on our Facebook page.  I trust parents find these forums positive and affirming as we share photos and stories of the life of the school.

Now it is time to pause and rejuvenate.  I wish all our families a restful and enjoyable time during these School holidays.  I look forward to seeing everyone back next term, refreshed and ready to go.

Junior School News

From the start to the end of our lives, we are all learners, and the early years of life are the most important as foundations for the future are developed and strengthened.  When we begin moving down the path that will take us through the Junior School years, the teenage years and ultimately into adulthood, we continue to draw on and cultivate our internal scaffolding in order to meet the demands of complex everyday challenges.

Children are born ready to learn about the fascinating world around them; we observe the incredible leaps in the skills, knowledge and understandings that happen in the first twelve years of life.  It is a time when: the brain develops with incredible speed and much of its ‘wiring’ is laid down; when bodies grow out of clothes too quickly; when experiences and relationships influence fragile emotions and social maturity.  It’s these “little understood” complexities that combine together to either support learning, or to interfere with it.

The most important aspect of children’s learning is about themselves – developing a picture that affects the way they approach a new situation, a tricky task, or building a relationship with another person.  They develop a “self-concept”, and an important part of that self-concept is the picture they have of themselves as learners: is it okay to be curious, to explore, to ask questions, to tackle problems, to try to figure things out, to experiment? Is it okay to try something - and fail sometimes?  Being a good learner means “having a go”, seeing oneself as capable, and taking reasonable risks.  It doesn’t always mean winning, or coming first.

All children need people (or at least one person) who believe in them, care for them, and want to support them as learners, not least because the most powerful learning tool for children comes through copying others around them.  This being the case, it is especially important that they spend time with adults:

  • Who are learners themselves
  • Who appreciate the uniqueness of each child, and who respect the child’s feelings, needs and interests.
  • Who help them learn to control their behaviour, and who teach them patiently about what behaviour is acceptable.
  • Who can provide materials and experiences to learn from, and have the time and desire to get involved with childhood explorations.
  • Who provide opportunities to ‘be in the world doing things’.

Children need to be actively involved in meaningful experiences.  Learning happens best “in context” when there is a real need to know.

Going to the supermarket, working in the garden, cooking with an adult, helping to wash the car, cleaning the house, as well as having fun at the park or the beach.  ‘Hands-on, minds-on’ is the expression sometimes used.  Having books to look at and read, stories to listen to, and people to have conversations with are vital; these provide a strong framework for the development of wide vocabulary and literacy skills – the stuff of successful social and emotional communication.

Above all, children need encouragement; they do not need to be the recipients of fast-paced pressure.  Competition might have a place, of course, but it should never be an end in itself.  Learning happens naturally when caring adults work side by side with children, nurture fruitful relationships, and explore the world together in ways that are interesting and fun.

Thank you to all our parents and teachers who patiently provide such vibrant, creative and positive home and school environments for our children.

P&F News

Hello Parents and Friends,

Well here we are already at the end of first term! The year is certainly flying by.  We’ve had lots of fun this term with a friendraising morning tea at Calista and of course the very popular disco just a few weeks ago.

Next term the fun gets started almost straight away with Mothers' Day festivities commencing in Week 2.  This year we are very excited to announce the return of the popular Mothers' Day stall. The stall will be open before school only and students will have an opportunity to choose from a range of many lovely items to gift mum or grandma. With gifts starting from just $1.00 they are sure to find something to suit every mum!  The stall will be open on Monday 7 May in the Wellard Junior School courtyard and Friday 11 May in the Wellard Y02 Hub (the former Kindy kitchen area) from 8.00am to 8.30am. The stall will also run at Calista campus outside the auditorium on Tuesday 8 May and Thursday 10 May. We will have both cash and card facilities available.

We will also continue to run the Mothers' Day breakfast this year where families can come and enjoy a delicious breakfast before school. This year the breakfast will be held in the Wellard Y02 Hub on Friday 11 May from 7.15am - 8.15am. Parents can enjoy a selection of yummy breakfast items such as ham and cheese croissants, scones with jam and cream, selected danishes, mini cupcakes, quiches, and fruit. Tea and coffee will also be available. Students will receive a juice box and delicious muffin. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $3.00 for students. This year tickets will only be available online at www.trybooking.com/VDFP. Tickets are on sale now until Friday 4 May or until sold out. Whilst this event is to celebrate Mothers' Day, all parents and friends are welcome to attend (even if mum can’t). Any queries, please email pcacspf@gmail.com.

So, that’s it from the P&F for Term One. We hope you all have a wonderfully fun and safe holidays and we will see you all next term.

Scholastic Book Fair at the Calista Campus

Exciting news!

The Calista Campus is having it’s own Scholastic Book Fair this year.

The Scholastic Book Fair is a great way to promote literacy and at the same time raise funds for the Calista School library to purchase new resources.

This year’s Book Fair will be held in Week 4 of Term 2.  On Wednesday 23 May, all Junior School students at the Calista Campus will be given the opportunity to come to the Book Fair with their class to write up their wish list.  Parents and students will have the opportunity to purchase from the Book Fair before or after school from the Wednesday afternoon.

Date:   23 – 25 May 2018

Venue:  Calista Auditorium

Times for purchasing of Book Fair items :

3.15pm – 4.00pm Wednesday to Friday

8.00am – 8.30am Thursday and Friday

For the Scholastic Book Fair to be a success it requires volunteers. We need volunteers to assist the students with the writing of their wish lists on the Wednesday morning and also to assist with sales.  If you feel that you would like to assist please contact Melanie Hill in the Wellard library  or email library@pcacs.wa.edu.au

Thank you

Calista Harmony Week Celebrations

Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Week is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a week of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. The aim is to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone.

On Tuesday 20 March all the students and staff at Calista Early Learning Campus dressed up in their National Costume to celebrate the diversity of our students. Click the link below to revisit the excitement on the day.

RAC BStreetsmart Event

Thursday 5 April saw 101 of our Years 10 and 11 students join 8000 other students from across Perth attend the RAC BStreetsmart event. Taking the train from Wellard station we arrived in Perth alongside the thousands who were also making their way to Perth Arena.

The event is designed to demonstrate the consequences of distracted driving, speeding and drink and drug driving. It also aims to inform students on how to reduce risk taking behaviours.

The morning programme features a crash scene re-enactment attended by genuine emergency services personnel, just as would occur at a real crash site. The morning was compered by Rob Pike, who also recounted his own crash story which saw him lose his friends and his feet.

During the lunchbreak, students were free to speak to the emergency services, ask them pertinent questions and explore their vehicles and equipment.

The afternoon comprised a series of talks from guest speakers, each with a powerful and unique insight into the consequences of road crashes. Firstly helicopter paramedic Josh Lyons spoke of the “Golden Hour”, the critical first 60 minutes after a crash which can impact victims’ survival.

Konnah Ruru, a 20 year old surviving quadriplegic, urged teenagers to think and slow down; he was living proof that decisions made in the moment could be life changing in terms of future freedom and quality of life.

Finally, Dr Sudhakar Rao, Director of Trauma at the State Major Trauma Centre, Royal Perth Hospital, concluded the talks with a practical but emotional plea to assume personal responsibility when using vehicles and roads. He offered insight into what happens at the Trauma Centre, simple advice for keeping safe, provided powerful images and descriptions of injuries sustained in road traffic accidents and gave a glimpse into how this impacts families and the wider community.

WA has the highest rate for death from road traffic incidents. So whilst confronting, the messages from the event were relevant and timely.  If they influence future decisions in a positive way then the goal of the event, to help reduce road traffic deaths in WA, can be achieved.

Years 7, 8 and 9 Lightning Carnival

Each year, all students from Years 7, 8 and 9 will compete in a Lightning Carnival fun sports day.  Students will select a sport to participate in; they will play a series of shortened, modified games against other ACC schools and students of the same age.  Results and scores are not kept and the aim is to have fun in a semi competitive environment.  This is a compulsory event during school hours, where all students will join in and have a fun day out.

Year 7s will have their Lightning Carnival on Monday 7 May (Week 2, Term 2)

Year 8 and 9s will have their carnivals on Wednesday 9 May (Week 2, Term 2)

The sports will be played on various sports grounds in the metropolitan area.  Students should have received a note outlining the details.  Students sports nominations can be viewed on the window outside the science building.

Senior School Cross Country Carnival

The second day back at School next term on Friday 4 May (Week 1, Term 2) will see all senior school (Years 7 to 12) students take part in the annual Interhouse Cross Country race.  Students will be walking and jogging parts of the course during Phys Ed classes so they are familiar with the track and are ready for the big day.  The event will run in the morning at 9.00am and finish at approximately 11.00am.  Races will be run in year groups and genders – Years 7, 8, 9, 10, 11/12.  The course will still start and finish on Wellard oval (approximately 3km), its takes the students around the perimeter of the School as well as up Abingdon Crescent and the footpaths of Wellard Oval.

Students can arrive and leave School in their House sports uniform, but must also wear their School tracksuits. Predominantly white shoes must be worn to and from School; however, if students have specific running shoes they wish to wear which are a different colour then they may wear them for their race.   All students are encouraged to go for a jog during the school holidays in preparation for the event.  If you are able to assist as a course marshal, please see me on the morning of the event and we will allocate a job for you.

Thanks and best wishes to all students

Year 11 Boys Basketball Team

As we say goodbye to Basketball season 2017/18 and the boys move on to compete in Aussie Rules Football over the winter months, it is with pride that they hang up their boots. The team have been competing in the Under 18 District Competition this year at The Mike Barnett Sports complex and finished in fourth place after a very intense and close semi-final. Well done PCACS Tropics!

Junior School Interhouse Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 29 March Peter Carnley ACS held our annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival at the Kwinana Recquatic Centre. Due to the size of our Junior School the carnival is split into two mini carnivals with Years 3 and 4 competing in the morning and Years 5 and 6 in the afternoon. The highlight of this year was the very loud cheering coming from the four House bay areas – by far the loudest I have heard since being at PCACS. Next year I challenge the students to cheer louder so that we might even lift the roof off the Recquatic Centre.

It was fantastic to see so many students jumping into the pool and swimming to earn points for their House. Every student who had a go should be very proud of themselves because for some of us swimming can be extremely daunting. I am sure spectators were left in awe of some of the swimming talent that we have in the Junior School who have earnt themselves champion medals.

After both carnivals were completed and the points were tallied the 2018 Junior School Swimming Carnival champions are:

A big thank you to all of the staff and parents who helped run or cheered loudly at our carnival – your support is greatly appreciated. Lastly a well done to our Year 6 swimming captains whose leadership was invaluable. Harry Wood and Joss Wilson of Laurence, Mia Anderson and Lucian Stocker of Lindbeck, Paige Crellin and Tayte Oxley of Moody, Indiana Duff-Grosvenor and Lucas Dorant of Murray, you were excellent captains!

KSSA Interschool Swimming Carnival

On Friday 6 April 28 of our best swimmers from Years 4 - 6 competed in the KSSA Interschool Swimming Carnival held at the Kwinana Recquatic Centre. The standard of swimming continues to improve with this year’s carnival being some of the best ever! The cheering, again, was spectacular with PCACS chants being heard by all spectators. Well done to Joshua Whittleton and Jaycie Hooper who were commented as being very enthusiastic and encouraging all team members to join in. Our team battled hard all day and had constant lead changes with St Vincent’s Primary school. After all the races were swum the results are as follows:

Despite finishing in a close second place PCACS did not go back to school empty handed. The Handicap Shield was graciously accepted by our Interschool swimming captains Deacon Mastaglia and Joss Wilson. The handicap shield takes into account a school’s performance and their school population size, affirming how talented our swimming squad is.

Many of our students celebrated individual success and were awarded champion medals. Congratulations to the following students:

Thank you to Mrs Morphew who made sure all our swimmers were ready for their races and to every PCACS supporter who were able to spare some time in their day.

From the Chaplain

From the Chaplain

Well, we have come to the end of Term 1 in 2018. It has been a long term, and we have done a lot in it: we have welcomed students new to the school in the different year groups, and new to the idea of school in our Calista campus. We have had various year camps and all the adventures and challenges that those bring. We have had our Year 12 Ball, and several sporting carnivals. We have had our Calista Campus officially blessed by Archbishop Kay Goldsworthy within her first month of being installed as Archbishop in this province. We have had excursions and incursions and various holidays: Labour Day and the Easter long weekend with Good Friday and Easter Monday. We have had a good but busy term.

So now it is time to rest.

The writer of the Old Testament book of poetry called Ecclesiastes, who many believe to be King Solomon (although there is some discussion over this), says that “there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Eccl 3:1). Students and staff have worked very hard these last 11 weeks of term (and even longer for those staff who work during the holidays) and now it is time to rest. I hope these next two weeks give you plenty of time for rest and refreshment, whatever you end up doing. I hope that you come back to school and work having had a good break, and you are ready to grasp the next challenge with both hands, and take all the opportunities that are given to you.

8 Ball Pool Table for St Barholomew's House

St Bartholomew's House includes a men's aged care residential service called James Watson's Hostel. They love their 8-ball pool table so much that they have worn it out. Could you please advertise in your parish or school for anyone who has an 8 Ball pool table that the men of James Watson Hostel could have. Please contact the Chaplain, The Reverend Ross Jones 0423 209 565 or email chaplain@stbarts.org.au . Transport can be arranged.

Services at All Saints, Kwinana

9.00am Sundays - usual Sunday Communion service. All are welcome. Rev Linda Flewker-Barker is away until early May, so we will have a selection of priests who have agreed to take services for her. You will still be very welcome in her absence.
