From the Principal - Ms Felicity House

Nothing stands still at PCACS. Since our last newsletter our students have competed in the ACC Cross Country, 4B have pushed themselves and their guests in Fitter, Faster, Better. Exams and parent teacher interviews have continued to roll through. The music department have been busy with the new sound lab in full swing and the Year 5 and 6 students heading to the Perth Concert Hall.  Activities such as these build confidence, team spirit, cooperation and well-being. Details of these and other exciting opportunities can be found further in the newsletter.

Our School Patron, Dr Peter Carnley will join us for Founders’ Day celebrations next week. His legacy is an extraordinary one. Born in New South Wales, Peter Frederick Carnley began his tertiary studies in Law. A deep thinker who continually searches for meaning and knowledge, it wasn’t long before he acted on a deep calling into the priesthood, changing his studies to Theology. He completed his Ph.D at Cambridge University and went on to become the Archbishop of Perth at the age of only 43 and later Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia. Dr Carnley is noted for challenging traditional thinking of the Church. A strong voice in support of the ordination of women, he ordained the first women priests in Australia at St George’s Cathedral in 1992. Those women and many who followed now hold positions in the Church that were previously unthinkable, including the Archbishop of Perth, Kay Goldsworthy, the first female Archbishop in the Anglican Church. Our School is honoured to be named after a living legend, one of the great characters of the Anglican Church. This year we have created ‘A Day with Dr Carnley’ on Tuesday June 11. Dr Carnley will start the day at Calista with our early learners in Chapel and then he will come across to Wellard to spend time with our students and student leaders. He is a devoted husband, father and grandfather and his wife Ann will be delivering the Homily at the Founders’ Day service. Parents are welcome to join us for the Service.

Founders’ Day will begin with a Founders’ Day Service at Calista at 8:45am for our Kindergarten to Year 1 students. The Service for the Year 2 to Year 12 students will begin at 10am in the Keith Lindbeck Centre, Wellard Campus. We honour our School and House Patrons and present our 2020 Scholarship winners, as well as awarding our Service Badges to staff who have been at the School for 5 and 10 years respectively. The students will continue their celebrations with games and activities including the Junior School lapathon. The day will be a lovely blend of respectful reflection, celebration and fun.

This year our focus for fundraising has turned to our local community. We are supporting Anglicare through a number of initiatives including the Junior School lapathon. At Calista, we are raffling a bike thanks to the generous donation from The Honourable Mr Roger Cook MLA – Member for Kwinana. Tickets can be purchased from Calista administration. We are pleased to announce that Mr Cook will be in attendance at the Calista Founders’ Day Service to draw the winner of the bike on 14 June. All proceeds will go to the Anglicare Winter Appeal to support the important work they do in this region.  We thank Roger Cook for his ongoing support of our School.

God bless.

Music Sound Lab

The new Music Sound Lab is up and running.  Our Senior Music students have been using the new lab to record and edit music demos as a part of their Certificate II in Music Industry. The course requires students to explore the techniques of technology in music making.  In addition to their live recordings, the students have been experimenting with using MIDI instruments, loop sequences and effects to create their own compositions.  The students are enjoying exploring this area of music making, in the collaborative environment of our new lab.

For more information about the Certificate Music course, please contact

Music Recital Evenings

The annual Peter Carnley Anglican Community School Music Recital Evenings are being held over three nights and one afternoon in Week 9.  All recitals will be held in the Calista Auditorium.  The Music Recital Evenings are an opportunity for our instrumental students to share what they have been working on in their Semester 1 lessons, while also practising their performance skills.

We encourage all students to perform, including beginners; however, if you or your child has any concerns regarding this please contact me.  Instrumental tutors will work with the students to select an appropriate piece and to ensure an adequate performance standard is ready for the recital.  All instrumental students should have received an information note regarding their performance.  If you have not received your note, or if you learn an instrument externally and would like to perform, please contact Alicia Walter in the Music Office or email music@pcacs.wa.edu.au

Junior School WASO Excursion

On Wednesday 29 May, the Year 5 and 6 instrumental students attended a rehearsal of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra at the Perth Concert Hall, as they prepared for their concert “Romantic Rachmaninov and Symphonic Sorcery.”

Under the baton of conductor Nicholas Carter, the orchestra took us through the process of a professional rehearsal, with lots of stopping and starting as they perfected their performance of Rachmaninov’s “Symphony No. 2”.  The students enjoyed seeing the many different instruments on stage. Some they were familiar with, such as the violin and flute, while some were new such as the tuba and the timpani.  All agreed that the giant Bass Drum was particularly impressive.

Playing in an musical ensemble offers the opportunity to express oneself, form strong friendships and work as a team. It is also lots of fun!  Peter Carnley ACS has a number of fantastic instrumental ensembles to join, led by our expert instrumental teachers.  These include Junior Band, Senior Concert Band, Certificate Music Contemporary Band, Violin Ensemble and Cello Ensemble.  We also have 3 choirs on offer:  Young Voices (Year 2-3), Peter Carnley Children’s Choir (Year 4-6) and Senior Choir (Year 7-12). Our ensembles perform at various school and community events throughout the year.  Last year saw a number of our ensembles performing on the stage at Perth Concert Hall and at the Perth Arena.

If you would like to learn and instrument or join an ensemble, please contact Ms Alicia Walter in the music office, or email music@pcacs.wa.edu.au.  Instrumental enrolment forms can also be found on the SEQTA portal.

ACC Cross Country

The 2019 ACC Interschool Cross Country Carnival was held on the surrounds of Perry Lakes on Thursday of Week 5.  A squad of 67 Years 7 to 12 students were selected to compete in the gruelling course of 3km for the girls and 4 km for the boys.  With approximately 4000 students from 80 schools, it was a big event, with races having up to 400 competitors.  It was a fantastic experience for our students as this was a good indicator of how fast they were compared to some of the best runners from some of the biggest schools in the state.

Our squad members performed to their best and did the school very proud.  It was a great to see the students cheering each other on and showing wonderful PCACS sportsmanship and behaviour.  Our top performing student was Year 7 Anotida Chiyangwa who placed 13th in the Under 13 Boys race.

Congratulations to all students who competed and proudly represented our School.  Thanks you to Mrs Layman, Mr Radulovic and Mr Halliday and our student helpers Alisia and Frances who helped on the day.

All results can be seen on the ACC website.

Olivia Walters - 'Training' to Succeed

Congratulations to Year 6 PCACS student, Olivia Walters who has received an award at the recent WA Model Railway Exhibition at Claremont showgrounds.

Olivia picked up 1st place for the "Best Layout not exceeding 24sq feet" trophy as judged by the official judges.

The "Most Popular Exhibit" award is still yet to be announced, as this award is judged by the public (which she won last year) so she may even claim a second trophy!   Good luck Olivia.

Netball Success - Jennai Malaquin & Caela Trent

Congratulations to Jennai Malaquin and Caela Trent on representing Rockingham Districts Netball Association in the 2019 Fuel to Go and Play Association Championships over the June long weekend. These Championships saw forty one associations from Western Australia and Singapore compete against each other over the three days.

Their U14 Division 4 team won six of their seven games leaving them on top coming into the Grand Final. At full time they were a draw, but unfortunately they lost in overtime to Bridgetown.  An Amazing effort girls.
