From the Principal

From the Principal - Ms Felicity House

Term 2 brings a strong academic focus with NAPLAN, Senior School exams and semester assessments across the school, leading to reporting later in the term. I encourage all families to settle quickly into study and homework routines. The Senior School Parent Teacher interviews have provided an excellent opportunity to discuss academic progress and gain advice for academic success.

We started the term with a solemn ANZAC Day Service in the Keith Lindbeck Centre. It is our honour to remember the sacrifices made by the men and women of our armed forces and to acknowledge those who continue to serve our country, risking their lives to keep Australia safe and to secure peace and freedom around the world. Our Head Girl, Tisha Davies, and Head Boy, Blake Newton represented PCACS at the Kwinana RSL Service on ANZAC Day, laying a wreath on behalf of our School.

Our Walkabout Cambodia Pilgrims have returned from their tour enriched and deeply affected by their experiences. Mr Dewhurst and our students have been preparing for the trip since last year, but no manner of preparation can truly ready pilgrims for the sights, sounds and friendships made along the way. The Killing Fields and Genocidal Centre are confronting but create the context for the cultural immersion. Spending time with the students from C9 School was most rewarding and formed bonds that will last for a long time. I commend our pilgrims for the way in which they embraced the experience. Their desire to provide service to others and their personal growth from their time together in Cambodia is inspiring. We thank Mrs Weddikkara for making the experience possible, Frederick Irwin ACS for inviting us to join their trip and we are most indebted to Mr Dewhurst for leading our students on the pilgrimage.

Over the holidays I travelled to The Holy Land on a study tour. 'The Footsteps of Jesus' course took us from Jerusalem, through the Jordan River Valley to Galilee. My fellow pilgrims included colleagues from Anglican Schools and parishes across Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Together with Mr Jeremy Ludlow, Mrs Elizabeth Guilbert and Mr Keith Lindbeck, we retraced the footsteps of Jesus, exploring the Christian story through visits to historical sites, contextual bible study and spiritual reflection. On Palm Sunday we processed with tens of thousands of pilgrims from the Mount of Olives, across the Kidron Valley, past the Garden of Gethsemane to the Lion's Gate. The joyous singing and waving of palms was a stark contrast to the solemnity of the Easter vigil. Walking the way of the cross along Via Dolorosa on Good Friday saw our group expand as other Christians joined us for prayer and readings. Our travels took us to icon places including The Holy Sepulchre, Bethlehem, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee and Bethany beyond Jordan. Bearing witness to dozens of pilgrims renewing their baptismal vows in the Jordan River and sitting in the Judean Wilderness reflecting on Jesus time in the wilderness are moments that will stay with me forever. I was honoured to have the opportunity to intertwine my own steps with those taken by Jesus.  As pilgrims, we came to see the world through the eyes of Jesus and we will never see the world in the same way again.

I wish everyone the best for this busy term ahead, and especially to the Year 11 and 12 students as they prepare for their important upcoming exams.

God bless.

Senior School News - Ms Jude Stringer

Head of Senior School…..link up

Welcome back to another school term and to some chilly mornings that are a clear indication that the cooler weather is coming.  With a longer than usual holiday break behind us it is now time to get back to school life and all of the expectations required for students, teachers and parents / carers.

ANZAC SERVICE

Our ANZAC service was a moving occasion to start our School term.  This annual service is a time for us all to pause and reflect on the sacrifices of so many men and women who died in battle, and those who returned from wars and who bare physical and/or mental scars from the horrific and brutal realities of war and conflicts.

One of the most poignant reminders of World War I is the moving poem, 'In Flanders Fields', written by John McCrae, a Canadian army doctor, following the death of his close friend and compatriot Lieutenant Alexis Helmer. Helmer was killed on 2 May 1915 when a shell exploded during the second German gas attack.

In 1915, Major John McCrae witnessed red poppies blowing in the breeze over freshly dug graves and was inspired to write ‘In Flanders Fields,’ one of the greatest war poems ever written.

In doing so, he forever made the red poppy a symbol of remembrance and honour for our war dead.

Thank you to our students who displayed such reverence during our ANZAC service.  The spirit of ANZAC will live on into the future.

Term 2: A Full and Focused Term

As I preview the School calendar for Term 2 it is certainly going to be a very busy and challenging term for all of us.  Students will be preparing for Online NAPLAN, in class Assessments, Externally Set Tasks and Semester 1 Examinations as well as enjoying some family life, social life and some very important ‘chill’ time.

Staff will be focusing on giving all students the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to be ready to achieve their personal best results.  Understanding and answering questions effectively will be a priority and after school Co Curricular is available to all students wanting to take advantage of additional learning support. An organised and routine study plan is essential for all students to achieve results they can be proud of.  Healthy eating, plenty of sleep, limiting social media and family support is very important during the lead up to these significant assessments for students.

Welcome to Term 2

Last week it was a pleasure welcoming our students back to school.  They look wonderful in their winter uniforms and I thank families for ensuring their children are prepared for another busy term.  Thank you also goes to our teaching team who have the classrooms well organised and lessons running smoothly.

Swimming Success!

Our Interschool Swim Team participated at the KSSA Carnival last Friday and finished as overall winners.  They proudly brought the Charlie Ballard Shield back to PCACS and a number of our students were awarded medals.  It was a great day out and a wonderful opportunity for our students to compete against schools from our local community in a supportive and positive environment.  A huge thank you goes to all schools involved, Mr Holland and our parent volunteers; Kylie Trent, Danae Jolley, Darren Walters and Tenille Walters.  Congratulations to all students who participated.  They represented PCACS in a positive light and were well-rewarded for the hard work they put into training for the carnival.

Communicating with and Reporting to Families

A goal this year is to review the communication and reporting formats used for informing families about their child’s learning journey at PCACS.  This has resulted in a new Pre Primary to Year 6 Semester Report.  At the end of this semester you can expect to see a new and improved format.

The Portfolio has been replaced with an Evidence of Learning Folder which is available for families to view at any time and aims to be an individualised snapshot of each child’s learning.

Parent Teacher Interviews are taking place on the evenings of Wednesday 5 June for Wellard (Years 2 to 6) and Wednesday 12 June for Calista (Kindergarten to Year 1).  Parents are encouraged to make contact with their child’s teacher if they are unable to book a suitable time using the PTO booking system.  Alternate meeting times can be arranged directly with the teachers.

Aiming to provide greater transparency, a Learning Showcase will be held at each campus whereby families are invited to visit their child’s classroom to view their schoolwork.

Welcome back to Term 2 and a special welcome to our new students and their families.

The term has already been a very busy one with School Photos, ANZAC Commemorative services, Senior School Cross Country and the School Production.

ANZAC Day Commemorative Service

ANZAC DAY - There is one day in the year that involves all of Australia in ceremonies of remembrance, gratitude and nationalistic pride for all those Australian men and women who have fought and died in war.

At the commencement of this year’s ceremony I spoke to the students and ask them to remember all who have gone before us and fought to give us this great country of Australia.

"We recall those who, in the tragedy of war gave their lives for Australia and those who died for the freedom of all people. We remember those who found rest on the ridges of Gallipoli; those who rest in the cemeteries of the great wars; those who rest in the haze of desert and jungle; those who rest in the depths of the seas. We remember those who have fallen in the defence of peace, on land, in the air and on the sea. We remember each man, woman and child who has died so that the light of freedom, justice and humanity may continue to shine. Today, as we remember, we ask God that our praise may be worthy of their sacrifice."

Thank you to all of the students, parents and staff who attended and contributed to the solemn service. A special thank you to our invited guests Sergeant Anthony Van Andel (Australian Army), Mr Ron Hiscock (President of the Kwinana RSL) and Cr Matthew Rowse (City of Kwinana) for their ceremony participation.

Guys & Dolls Jr Success!

This year’s school production of Guys and Dolls Jr is a huge success.  Preparation for the show commenced all the way back in Term 3 last year with rehearsals commencing in Term 4. The Production featured  26 talented students on stage with students ranging from Year 7 to Year 12.  We also had 5 dedicated students working backstage to manage the many sets, props and staging.  Students rehearsed twice a week after school and gave up many Sundays and holidays to ensure they were prepared for the show. This week’s “Production Week” was a very busy time for these students with long rehearsal days and nights, but the hard work paid off when we opened on Wednesday evening to an enthusiastic audience and presented a fantastic show.  The students have had such a positive experience during Production season and learnt skills that they will take with them beyond their high school years. The close-knit nature of this cast is a key factor in the success of this production and the students should be commended for this.  The performance is one part of the show, however, the friendships formed and the confidence gained, along with the thrill of being on the stage, are the things that will stay with them for many years to come.

A huge thank you to the many staff, students and families who have collaborated to make this production possible.  From the cast onstage, to the many people backstage, and the dedicated people who have worked tirelessly to help bring this musical to the stage. I encourage you to purchase tickets to our remaining two shows on Friday evening at 7pm and Saturday afternoon at 2pm.  It is a show not to be missed! Tickets are available from the Koorliny Arts Centre website: http://koorliny.com.au/book-tickets/

Compass - Mr Adam Halliday

YEAR 7:  During Term 2, 20 Year 10 student leaders will be working with Year 7 students during Compass time for the Peer Support programme. Year 10 Leaders will be delivering dynamic games, activities and discussions, which foster the physical, mental and social well-being of young people. The programme supports young people in developing skills to take responsibility for their own wellbeing, deal positively, proactively and resiliently with life experiences, and be actively involved in, and supported by their community.

YEAR 8:  This term, the Year 8 Compass programme endeavours to work on collaboration and mateship as our students journey together.  They will be participating in Interhouse activities, which encompass leadership, teamwork, officiating, coaching and active participation.  We start to delve into the diverse range of relationships we experience and are able to identify both positive and negative relationships and their impact on ourselves and others.  As we journey through this term, we embrace how far the students have come in their transition to Senior School and we look ahead to where the journey will lead them in the near future.

YEAR 9:  Whilst students are immersed in ‘The Rite Journey’ programme throughout the whole year, each term has a different focus.  Throughout Term 2, students will transition from Who am I really?, which they explored in Term 1, to How do I get on with others?  The programme will continue to provide students with the opportunity and support to begin their transition from childhood to young adulthood. The idea of personal and group challenges will be explored this term to create opportunities for students to learn valuable life lessons. Today we live in a culture that promotes comfort, not challenges. Everything is about finding ways to escape hardship, avoid pain, and dodge duty.  In the past, young people were expected to make significant contributions to society.  Today, our culture expects very little from teens - not much more than staying in school and doing a few chores.  A sad consequence of such low expectations is that life-changing lessons go unlearned.

YEAR 10:  It is estimated that on any given night up to 10,000 West Australians go to sleep homeless. A staggering 42% of these people are under the age of 25. These young people rarely become homeless due to their own fault. Most young people experience, or are at risk of homelessness, due to their family circumstance. It is likely their home environment is unsupportive, abusive, violent or they have experienced a relationship or family breakdown.

The aim of the Year 10 Compass programme this term is to raise awareness of youth homelessness, empowering the students with knowledge around this issue so they can then make a difference with an informed view.  At the end of the programme, they will be invited to participate in the Anglicare WA Sleep Out (August) and encouraged to raise money for the Street Connect Bus.

YEAR 11 & 12: This term the Compass programme for Year 11 and 12 is flowing on from the Protective Behaviours of Term 1 by focusing on Gender-Specific Learning. It will encompass some Protective Behaviours learning and issues which impact each gender more directly. For our men this will centre around what it means to be a man in today’s society; exploring the idea of toxic masculinity linked to the high rates of male suicide stemming from limited emotional literacy skills. For our women the learning explores what positive feminism actually is, issues and situations which don’t currently support that and ways they can work towards change for themselves and others.

P&F News

Hello parents and friends,

We’ve had a great start to Term 2 with our Mother’s Day stall running at both campuses this week. This has again been very popular and we hope all the mums and grandmothers enjoy their gifts this weekend. Woolworths Earn and Learn is back in 2019 and we are collecting stickers that will be used to claim some fabulous items to benefit the students. So make sure to stick your stickers to a sheet and pop your completed sheets into a P&F box at either campus. Sticker sheets cans also be placed into the special earn and learn boxes located at Reception at both campuses.

Our next committee meeting is on Wednesday 22 May at 6.15pm. Meetings are held in the Admin Seminar Room at Wellard Campus and are open to all parents and friends. We would love to see new faces. We also have a friend-raising morning tea coming up at Wellard Campus on Friday 24 May. More details will come home about that in the coming weeks. In the meantime we hope that all of our PCACS families have a wonderful Mother’s Day this weekend and all the mums are totally spoilt. Don’t forget to get sticking!

Interhouse Cross Country

On the Friday of Week 1 this term, our Senior School students participated in the Interhouse Cross Country Carnival.  This took place on Wellard Oval as well as the surrounds of the School.  Students competed in year groups and ran the 3km track to the best of their abilities. The day started with the introduction to our new House Mascots which the students voted for and was received well by all.  I was particularly happy to see students giving it their all for their House and knowing that every person who finished the race received points to the tally.  It was Murray House who took the honours this year and won the carnival.  Congratulations to all students who took part, teachers for their help and parents for their support.

ACC Interschool Cross Country

A squad of 70 students has been announced for Senior School students who will be representing the School in the ACC Interschool Cross Country. The event will be held at Perry Lakes Reserve on Thursday 30 May.  A training schedule and note will also go out to those students involved.

RKAS Sport

This term’s (RKAS) Rockingham and Kwinana Associated Schools Interschool Sports Competition is for Year 7 and 8 students. The sports on offer are Year 7 Girls Netball, Year 8/9 Girls Netball and Year 8/9 Boys basketball.  All games are held on Wednesdays after school at either PCACS or the other RKAS schools.  The first round starts in Week 4 against Court Grammar School. Nominations are now open and students interested will receive a note outlining the details.  We wish all students the best for the upcoming season.

PCACS Sport

This year PCACS Sport has grown even more.  We have over 100 students representing our School on either a weekday or weekend, playing Netball and Basketball.  Our Basketball summer season has finished and it’s straight into the winter season. Our Netball teams have also started and it’s great to see so many students involved and playing regular sport. Once again a huge thanks for the hard work and dedication from the PCACS Sports Committee which includes Kylie Trent, Fiona Sullivan and Bec Clarke and not to mention the hard working parent, teacher and student coaches and managers of the teams.  I wish all teams good luck for the season ahead and look forward to watching some great sport.  I encourage the PCACS community to get behind these teams and come and support them at Mike Barnett Stadium.

Year 9 student Jake Crellin receives the ACC All Star Swimming team pin and Certificate from Ms House during assembly.

Lightning Carnival

Last week (Week 2), all Years 7, 8 and 9 students participated in the ACC Lightning Carnival.  This is sports fun day where students had to choose a sport to play for the day in a modified and relaxed environment (sports included AFL, Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, Rugby and Netball).  There were no scores kept, points awarded or trophies won. It was simply an opportunity for students of similar age to participate and be active and play sport in the right spirit.   We were fortunate with the weather and our students participated with great spirit, encouraging and helping others.  Thanks to all students and student helpers as well as the teachers for assisting with a fantastic and memorable two days.

All Star success

Congratulations to Year 9 student Jake Crellin who received the ACC All Star Swimming team pin and Certificate at the assembly on Thursday 9 May.  His performance at the F Division ACC Swimming Carnival in Term 1 earned him this selection.

2018/2019 Basketball season ending

As we head into the new 2019 Winter basketball season we look back on the previous 2018/2019 Summer season.  This season we welcomed the U8 boys team, Wildcats.  Vanessa Michael did an amazing job with these boys and they all seemed to enjoy the experience.  For Winter a lot of the boys compete in Auskick (AFL Rules) but we hope to see all their smiling faces back next summer.

In our Basketball Club we have 6 teams from U8s up to U19s.  This season Swans U16s girls played again in the Semi finals, no win unfortunately this time but an awesome result for all the girls.  Although not all teams have an opportunity to play in semi finals every season, there is such an overall improvement in the teams and it is only a matter of time until we see some more PCACS teams included.

Every season the dedication of the volunteer parents who coach and manage  is so appreciated and we would not have a club if it was not for the parents and their ongoing encouragement for their children to participate.

We had our windup this year at 'Rebound' where excess energy was expelled and many pizzas consumed.  The club presented the trophies.  The trophies recipients this year are as follows :

The older girls supporting, coaching and umpiring the younger teams

Our 2019 Winter Netball Season began on Saturday 4 May with huge success. We were all hoping that the rain would stop by the time the first teams stepped on court at 8.30am, and luckily it did!

Our newest and youngest teams, Astros and Cosmics played an awesome first game, doing themselves proud.

Our Under 12 Meteors team won by two goals, unfortunately our Under 12 Pegasus team lost.

Our Go Teams were next with Zodiacs just getting beaten at the last moment and Rockets playing their first ever game, where skills were improved from first quarter to last.

Next was our Open 2 team, Starbursts who came out very strong winning 49-29. Well done girls!

The last timeslot of the day was our other Open 4 team, Comets who also came out on top. Finally our U14 teams Eclipsers drew 14 all with some great sportsmanship in the game and the U14 Moonbeams who played hard, but unfortunately lost.

Thank you to all the umpires, coaches, parents and grandparents who came along to support the teams. Let’s have a fantastic season of netball fun.

Zero2Hero – CampHero October Applications Now Open (By Kai Best)

1. What did you do?

I learnt about mental health and suicide awareness, and how to look for the signs of suicide among my peers and family. I met 38 other campers and some amazing mentors and youth volunteers. We challenged ourselves to our breaking points both physically and mentally.

2. Where you went?

We stayed in Nanga Bush Camp in Dwellingup.

3. Who you were there with?

I didn’t know anyone when I first got there but by the end of the 5 days, I knew everyone’s names and their stories as we are all very close friends, family even.

4. What you got out of it?

I learnt that I often put up a mask to protect myself from others judgement and opinions. I also learnt how to break that mask down and accept myself, even if others can’t. I challenged myself, both mentally and physically, often to my breaking point. Overall I had a really good time and this camp is incredibly life-changing.

About CampHero

Camp Hero MHL is a 5-day youth leadership training camp that brings together students, mentors, and experts, around the vision of equipping young people to become mental health leaders and ambassadors in their community.

With each camp attended by WA’s most promising Year 10 to 12 students, the program has been designed to cover a wide range of topics that help to develop communication and leadership skills, as well as educate on the facts and fictions around mental health. Each day has a different theme and through tailored workshops, adventure based challenges and peer learning, participants gain the knowledge to support their own mental and physical health, and build the awareness and confidence to support others in doing the same.

Parenting Workshop Overview

Circle of Security - For parents of children 0-18years

Circle of Security is an early intervention workshop for parents and carers, which focuses on the child/parent relationship and how to create a secure attachment.

Our trained Facilitators work with parents and care givers to help them:

•   Understand their child’s emotional world by learning to read their emotional needs

•   Support their child’s ability to successfully manage emotions

•   Enhance the development of their child's self esteem

1-2-3 Magic & Emotion Coaching - For parents of children 2-12 years

1-2-3 Magic & Emotion Coaching is a parenting workshop which gives parents and caregivers a simple and effective approach to discipline 2 - 12 year olds. It provides parents with the knowledge and practical skills to set limits confidently and calmly when required and the ability to follow through with reasonable consequences.

Protective Behaviours - For parents of children 0-18 years

The Protective Behaviours program is a proactive approach to provide children, teens and vulnerable people with the skills and strategies to recognise when they are feeling unsafe and where to go to for help. Delivered in a safe format, this program is designed to leave parents feeling positive about equipping their children with positive life skills, such as assertiveness, emotional literacy and problem solving. These skills assist children to better cope with anxiety and know when to take risks, where to go for help and how to speak up against peer pressure, bullying and abuse.

Sensory Processing Difficulties (SPD) - For Parents of children 0 -17 years

Children experiencing SPD have difficulties with organising and responding to sensory input, which can lead to learning difficulties, developmental delay, anxiety and stress. This session is designed to inform parents of what SPD looks like, how it can affect children, basic strategies and coping mechanisms for parents and correct referral pathways for support and therapy.
