From the Principal

From the Principal - Ms Felicity House

These past two weeks have been filled with activities and events to grow minds, bodies and souls. We celebrated the success of our swimmers at the Senior School Assembly and at the Junior School Carnival. Amongst the celebration of swim champions and record breakers, we also recognise every swimmer who took part, for it is the effort made by every student, whether by competing or cheering and supporting others that makes a carnival such a delightful event.  I thank the parents, friends and past students who joined us and the staff who organised the carnivals. Our swim teams are now preparing for the ACC and KSSA Carnivals. We wish them well in their preparations.

We have nurtured our hearts and souls through some special ceremonies. Ash Wednesday signifies the first day of Lent and gave us an opportunity to come together to reflect, pray and begin preparations for Easter. Lent enables us to consider the direction our lives are taking and to make amends if we have lost our way. As you read this newsletter, you will read more about the Ash Wednesday Service and The Right Journey Calling and Departure Ceremony, a special service for our Year 9 students and their families. PCACS also played a significant role in the Commonwealth Day Service at St George’s Cathedral on 10 March 2019. The Prefects carried the flags of Commonwealth nations and had the opportunity to meet and speak with The Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia. Our Prefects together with YMAD have been focussing on raising awareness of issues facing our community. Today they held our first Crazy Hair Day to raise awareness and funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. The day was a great success, due to the hard work and inspiration of our Service Captain, Aiden Galbraith and House Captain, Georgia Johnston.

KIC Art Awards

PCACS was well represented in the annual art exhibition hosted by KIC (Kwinana Industries Council). The exhibition allows students from the participating KIC Education Partnership schools to nominate works to be selected for display. With categories covering Visual Art, Digital Media, Woodwork and Metalwork, Fashion, Fabric and Accessories, a variety of work was selected from PCACS. Congratulations to 2018 graduate Kristy Read-Shaw for winning the Garments, Jewellery and Cushion section with a stunning piece she constructed last year.  Yara Roaen also received a Highly Commended for a stunning bowl creation in the Woodwork and Metalwork category. The artworks are on display in the Gary Holland Centre in Rockingham until 21 March 2019.  You can visit the exhibition between 10.00am and 4.00pm each day.

Senior School Swimming Carnival

What a joy it was to be at the Senior School Swimming Carnival last Friday, 1 March.  The atmosphere was electric!  The spirit of true competition was seen in every event with loud cheering for all competitors not only the strong swimmers but those who gave it their all to finish a swim race.  A very big thank you to all students for your sense of fun and for just simply enjoying a sporting Senior School event.  Well done to Mr Weddikkara and his staff for their organisation and smooth running of this event, it was a huge success.

A special thanks to the Year 12 students.  What a show you gave us that was not only entertaining but great fun and added so much cheer, community heart and goodwill to this occasion.  It will be a tough act to follow for future Year 12 students.

Ash Wednesday Liturgy

Wednesday 6 March marked the start of the Lenten season.  Years 6 – 12 gathered in the KLC to participate in this service, a reminder to us all to take time to pause and reflect on our lives.  Lent challenges us to make a difference to those around us to carry more respect, love, generosity, openness, hospitality and hope in our hearts.  A reverent service to share our faith journey together is always a special occasion reminding us that we are committed to follow Christ’s teachings that model our School values.

A special thanks to all students for their devout worship during this service.

The Rite Journey

Against a perfect sunset backdrop and a still balmy evening Year 9 students and their parents / carers gathered to participate in the Rite Journey programme that reinvents the traditional process of Rite of Passage.  The two elements celebrated during the evening at the Shoalwater Reserve were the ‘Calling’ and ‘Departure’ acknowledging gratitude for childhood and an opportunity to learn, reflect and to look forward to young adulthood.

This was truly an inspirational experience that captured the power of love, connectedness and community that keeps us all secure and strong.

A special thanks to parents /carers, Mr Halliday, Mr Singh, Miss Hunter, Mr Weddikkara, Mrs Read, Mr Radulovic, student leaders and Ms House for their generosity and dedication to care for our students.

Interim Reports

Interim Reports will be available on SEQTA from Monday 1 April.  This report gives early indicators of the academic results a student is achieving and begins a dialogue between the parent, school and the student.  Please take this opportunity to discuss your child’s progress at the Parent, Student and Teacher interviews scheduled as follows:

Years 7- 12 – Tuesday 7 May - 3.30pm – 7.45PM

Years 7 – 12 – Tuesday 14 May – 3.30pm – 7.45pm

We encourage all parents to note these dates in your diary.

A letter will be sent to Year 11 and 12 parents requesting an interview if early results indicate that their child is at risk during these two final years of schooling.

Information outlining the process to make an interview time will be sent to all parents by the end of this term.

Look out for me wearing my Japanese kimono on Tuesday at Calista and Wednesday at Wellard.  Wellard students are reminded that there will be international treats to buy at the canteen on Wednesday in addition to the usual menu.

Parents who are keen to share information about their cultural heritage are encouraged to contact Mrs Padova who would be delighted to host parents during her Italian lessons to help celebrate multiculturalism.

Have a wonderful fortnight everyone!

Our newest addition needs a name!

"What has happened to the Italian Café?"  This is a question many people have asked since the start of the year. The School is currently renovating the area of the old café and turning it into office space for our growing School. Not wanting to lose the great opportunity the Café provided our students to learn new skills and enjoy a hot chocolate, the School decided to have a coffee trailer built.

After a little wait, our new trailer arrived this week.  The only problem now is that it doesn’t have a name. So what should we call it, what is in a name?

To help us decide we will be running a competition to name our trailer with the winning entry gaining their creator a month of free hot chocolates. That is 1 hot chocolate a day for 30 days. To enter your suggestion simply think of a great name, come to Student Services, fill out an entry form and put it in the box. Entries close on Friday 22 March.

I look forward to our students coming up with some great names.

Scholarship Programme

The School is currently taking applications for 2020 Scholarships.  Scholarships are available for current and prospective students across a number of areas.  Applications close on Wednesday 27 March with the Scholarship Examination being held on Saturday 30 March.

To apply for a Scholarship and register for the examination, please visit the Scholarship section of the School website LINK HERE

Senior School Student Council

Throughout Week 4 and 5, students in Year 7-11 have nominated for a Student Council role for 2019.  These students prepared and delivered a speech to their year group, describing their leadership skills and desire to represent their peers as a student councillor.  It was excellent to see the level of interest from our students with 45 students nominating to run for student council.  The calibre of speeches and preparation from the nominating students was excellent.  Unfortunately, we only have 15 student council positions available; however, it’s clear to see the exceptional level of leadership on displayed by our students, which will only develop further throughout their journey through Senior School to a potential prefect position in Year 12.  Congratulations to the following students for their appointment as student councillors for 2019:

Mr Adam Halliday
DIRECTOR OF PASTORAL CARE

An Observation for Commonwealth Day

A reverent Multi-faith Observance service was held in St George’s Cathedral on Sunday 10 March.  This service was based on the one similarly observed at Westminster Abbey, London.  The modern Commonwealth of Nations has evolved as an international partnership of countries dedicated to co-operation and governed by mutual respect.  Today, it is an international family of 53 member countries spread through Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Mediterranean, North America, and the Pacific.  Its 2 billion people are over a quarter of the world’s population and over half are aged 25 or under.

Equality, justice, and democracy are the core beliefs of the Commonwealth.  They are reflected in the decisions by Commonwealth Heads of Government and their ministers who meet regularly, and in the activities of the various Commonwealth organisations and agencies.

The theme for 2019 ‘A Connected Commonwealth’ speaks of enduring practical value and global engagement made possible as a result of the determination of our culturally diverse and widely dispersed family of nations to corporate and work together in friendship and goodwill.  Working together to protect our natural environment, corporate on trade and encourage inclusive economic empowerment for all people – particularly women and your and marginalised communities.  Friendly participation in sporting events encourages young people to participate in sport for development and peace.

As a connected Commonwealth we collaborate by varied means to work closely to share common values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter.  His Excellency the Honourable Kim Beazley AC Governor of Western Australia delivered a message from Her Majesty the Queen, Head of the Commonwealth that captured the significance of our nations working toward a more just and ethical world.

PCACS was proudly represented by our School leaders:  Tisha Davies, Blake Newton, Hyllyan Lopez, Dakota Franz, Jack Austin and Millie Zaragoza who participated in carrying flags representing countries of the Commonwealth of Nations.  We thank our student leaders for being ambassadors at this very significant event.

KIC Art Awards Winners

The Kwinana Industries Youth Art Awards provides a fantastic opportunity to feature student artwork from a number of secondary schools in the region.

Kwinana Industries Council in conjunction with Tianqi Lithium and Coogee Chemicals was proud to host the 2019 Youth Arts Awards on Wednesday 13 March at the Gary Holland Community Centre.  These Art awards featured work across the categories of Visual Art, Digital Media, Fabrics, Woodwork and Metalwork.

Congratulations to Kristy Read – Shaw (2018 Year 12) who was the winner of the Fabric and Jewellery category. Kristy designed and made a costume based on the theme “Steampunk”. Her target market was young females who like to dress up for cosplay, want good value for money and something original and unique. Kristy considered environmental issues when designing and explored ways to make the garment environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Congratulations also to Yara Roaen (Year 9) who was awarded a Highly Commended for her laminated meranti and jarrah fruit bowl which earned high praise from the judges.

The Rite Journey Calling and Departure Ceremony

Our Year 9 students have been participating in The Rite Journey, which runs all year as part of the PCACS Senior School Compass Programme.  The Rite Journey is the cornerstone programme within Compass, which explores the theme of ‘Journey Within’.  Throughout the year, students will begin their journey to adulthood, and gain the knowledge and skills to develop into responsible, self-aware, and respectful adults.  They will then continue this journey throughout the Compass Programme to explore the themes of ‘Mapping the future’ ‘Fellow Travellers’ and ‘Journey Beyond’.

The Rite Journey involves a number of celebrations of the transition into adulthood, and we were able to celebrate the first of these with the ‘Calling and Departure’ ceremony being held on Thursday 7 March at Shoalwater Reserve.  Mother Nature was smiling upon us when a wet and sombre day transformed into a magical setting down by the ocean with a sunset fit for a postcard.  The symbolism of the setting sun and the power and majestic nature of the ocean were important in helping students and parents in reflecting on their childhood.

Students participated in a symbolic gesture to their childhood with boys writing messages to themselves on stones before throwing them out into the ocean, and the girls lit sparklers as a symbol of their childhood beginning to burn out.  Students were then involved in a heart-warming experience with the opportunity to sit with their parents and read a letter their parents had written them, reflecting on the first 14 years of their lives.  Photographs and memories were shared which brought with them laughter, smiles and tears for both students and their parents.

The event had a wonderful sense of community spirit and a genuine excitement for the journey ahead for these Year 9 students in the Rite Journey Programme and beyond.  Thank you to the students, parents and Rite Journey mentor teachers who have already shown a great degree of commitment to make the experience of Rite Journey such a powerful and successful one.

PCACS Bully No Way Day - Friday 15 March 2019

Friday the 15 March was the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. On this day, Year 7 students said ‘No to Bullying.’ As part of the Pastoral Programme, students made a pledge to support the campaign. They wrote their pledges on brightly coloured cut out hand shapes and arranged them on the windows in the library making a bold statement for the rest of the School to view.  Thank you to all the Year 7 students who took part, I hope you honour your pledges and maintain a firm stance against bullying.

2019 Senior School Interhouse Swimming Carnival

The 2019 PCACS Senior Interhouse Swimming Carnival was held in Week Four at the Warnbro Aqua Jetty.  It was our biggest carnival yet with a record number of participants.

The students, dressed in House colours came to the Warnbro Aqua Jetty ready for a great day of competition.  The weather was ideal and competition was fierce with some excellent swimming.  Our Year 12s set the tone of the day with some interesting commentary at the announcers table and encouragement of all swimmers.

The day ran smoothly largely thanks to our fantastic teachers and parent support, as well as the exemplary behaviour shown by our students. It was great to see the comradeship and sportsmanship shown by all.

Congratulations once again to Laurence House on winning the carnival.

Thank you to all the parents, teachers, students and friends for their help and support with the running of the carnival.

Mr Roh Weddikkara
LEARNING AREA COORDINATOR - HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The tally board was as follows:

Congratulations to the Champions and Runners up in the following age groups:

Congratulations to the following students who broke School records:

ACC Interschool Swimming Carnival

50 students from Years 7-12 have been selected to represent the School in the upcoming ACC Interschool swimming carnival at HBF stadium on Wednesday 20 March.  We will be fielding a strong squad this year who will be pushing the opposition in the “F” division carnival.  The team completed a training session at Warnbro Aqua Jetty on Monday against the RKAS schools, in preparation for next week.  Good luck to the entire squad.

RKAS Sport

The Rockingham-Kwinana Associated Schools (RKAS) Wednesday sports competition is now underway.  Our Year 7-9 Cricket team unfortunately lost to Kolbe Catholic College last week, but will be looking to do well against Court Grammar School in their next game in a couple of weeks time.  Our Year 10-12 Basketball team won their first game convincingly by 50 points, but then had a tough second match losing narrowly to Kolbe Catholic College.  Our Year 10-12 Girls Basketball team have played extremely well against some tough opposition and I’m sure a win for them is just around the corner.

Please come along and support the teams or you can check out the fixtures, results and ladders on the following link:

ACC APP

The Associated and Catholic Colleges (ACC), which is our sporting association for all senior school interschool sport has designed an APP which gives students, parents and teachers easy access to the ACC Sport information in a fast and convenient format.  Most people carry a mobile device with them and the ACC sport app will make it easier to access news, results, event information, fixtures, programs etc…from the Associated & Catholic Colleges.

This is the must have app to follow everything ACC Sport.  Results from all events, breaking news, important updates, calendar events, event photos, event programs, fixtures, contact details and GPS carnival locations.

The APP is free and is available on all mobile devices and I encourage you to all get on board and have up to date information regarding Interschool sport.

P&F News

Hello Parents & Friends,

Week 6 already?! How did we get here so fast?  Hopefully by now you have all received your disco flyers for the ELC Fairytale Ball and Junior Dance Party. The fun happens on Friday 22 March 2019 in the Wellard Undercover Area with the ELC event running from 5.00pm to 6.15pm and the Junior event running from 6.30pm to 8.00pm. As usual parents will be required to stay at the ELC Ball. Tickets will be on sale at both campuses before school on both Thursday 21 March and Friday 22 March from 8.00am to 8.30am. Tickets will also be available on the night but we strongly recommend you pre purchase your tickets to avoid queuing on the night. All tickets will include a drink and lolly bag in an effort to reduce congestion at the canteen. Students will also have the opportunity to purchase additional snack items should they wish to do so. This year we have engaged a different entertainment company who specialises in younger children and promises to engage them in lots of fun games and crazy dancing. As always there will be loads of prizes on offer so don’t forget to grab your ticket to our biggest event all year!

As this is by far our biggest event all year we are not able to run it without additional parent help. If you have some time to give on the night please email us at pcacspf@gmail.com and we will add you to the roster. The seniors are not missing out this year with their own private event being held on the last day of term, Thursday 11 April 2019. Students will be invited along to a themed roller disco which promises to be loads of fun with lots of prizes also up for grabs on the night. More details to come soon. School banking has also commenced this week. We hope that every student has the opportunity to benefit from this wonderful program and learn important savings skills as well as earn themselves some fabulous prizes provided by CBA. Banking days are each Wednesday for Wellard Campus and each Thursday for Calista Campus. Don’t forget about our costume box. The P&F is taking donations of outgrown but in good condition costumes to be made available for those students who are unable to provide their own costume for celebration days for whatever reason. Boxes have been set up at reception of both campuses. Please consider donating your unwanted costumes in readiness for the upcoming harmony day and book week. Look forward to seeing you all at the disco next week.

Harmony Day

What is Harmony Day?

Harmony Day is held each year in March. It is an opportunity to celebrate our cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

The message of Harmony Day is 'everyone belongs'.

Did you know?

  • Over the last 70 years seven million migrants have made Australia their home.
  • Almost half of Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was.
  • People from more than 200 countries make up our Australian community and over 300 languages are spoken in our homes.
  • Apart from English the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi.

Western Australia is one of the most diverse States in Australia with almost one-third (31%) of our population born overseas. More than half (52%) have at least one parent born overseas and three-quarters (75%) identify that they have a non-Australian ancestry.

Western Australia is home to people from more than 200 countries, speaking approximately 270 languages and dialects (including around 50 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages).

People from the United Kingdom, Europe, South-East Asia and the Middle East, and more recently from South Asia and Africa, have made Western Australia their home, creating a harmonious environment that respects diversity.

Canteen on Harmony Day

The canteen will be selling various snacks from around the world, including waffles, Portuguese custard tarts, fairy bread, curry puffs, sushi, ham and cheese croissants.  Available to all Wellard students at recess and lunch. Prices start from 50c to $2.00.  Everyday menu will still be available to order as per usual.

Year 5 Camp

A highlight of Year 5 most definitely has to be the Year 5 Camp.  Camp encourages students to extend their paradigm and to try new and exciting activities. Mrs Morphew, Mrs McDonald and I were lucky enough to travel to Forrest Edge Camp and join in with the fun.

There were so many activities jammed into the three days, with each activity developing key skills: Teamwork, trust, courage and responsibility.  During the Flying Fox and Climbing Wall, the Year 5 students placed trust in their peers to help them accomplish the task.  Teamwork was required to build a raft which would not sink, and complete an obstacle course.  Many students demonstrated courage through being away from home, talking to new people or flying through the air on an inflatable donut. Students developed responsibility by taking turns preparing and serving meals for their peers and cleaning up afterwards.

Students also learnt a lot about our native land, plants and animals. During the Incentive Walk, we learned about the difference between a Jarrah and Marri tree, and discovered how to find food from plants.  Our in-class learning was consolidated by looking at some of the adaptations plants and animals have developed in order to survive in the Australian bush. This incentive walk culminated in a mud fight; which the teachers and parents definitely won.

The staff of Forest Edge made us all feel extremely welcome, supported, and very well fed.  Brooke and her team spurred the students on and encouraged them to extend their boundaries and develop the confidence to try new experiences.  We would like to thank our wonderful parent helpers: Mr Matthew Rowse, Mr Darren Walters, Mr John Tuitupou, Mr Shaune Guppy, Mrs Linda Hunt, Mrs Amie Leaf, Mrs Anna Ulupov and Miss Merceline Almaraj. They gave up time with their families, comfortable beds, and sleep to join us. Your support and assistance was greatly appreciated. Thank you for an amazing and memorable experience for the Year 5 students.
