From the Principal

From the Principal - Ms Felicity House

Term 3 is my favourite term and this one has been no exception. Term 3 has featured some old favourites with some welcome new additions to life at PCACS. Book Week this term saw the whole school dress up in their favourite book characters with Reading is My Superpower as the theme. Carnivals always feature at this time of year, with the ELC Tabloid Sports, Junior School and Senior School Athletics carnivals. I thank the P&F for their continued support of the School with morning teas, canteens at the carnivals and a slightly revised format for the Dad’s Campout. 'A Night on Broadway' was a spectacular addition to Arts Week, with over 80 performers finishing with a heart-warming rendition of 'We Still Call Australia Home.'

Arts and Technologies Week

It was wonderful to see so many parents, students, alumni and community members at our Arts and Technologies Exhibition and Sundowner on Friday evening. Our guest artist, Vanessa Liebenberg, an artist and textile designer, displayed her intricate art works inspired by nature. The exhibition was opened by Mr Bert Keulder, owner of Tall Poppy Art Gallery in Safety Bay. A mix of musical items, textiles fashion parade, art, metal work and woodwork made the evening a delightful experience. Thank you to our Arts staff for their hard work in bringing the exhibition together. Arts Week continued this week with activities including 'A Night on Broadway' and 'Peter Carnley’s Got Talent'.

Award of Meritorious Service

This term has seen the flourishing of service learning across our school. The inspiring work of YMAD (Youth Making a Difference), Operation Op Shop, the Anglicare Sleepout, visits to Aegis Aged Care and the Animal Protection Society, are just a few of the activities of this term.  In recognition of Mrs Rebecca Weddikkara’s passion and dedication to the growth of service learning from Kindergarten to Year 12, she was awarded an Award of Meritorious Service by the Australian Association for Religious Education. As a Foundation member of staff, Rebecca has a unique perspective on how to grow the heart and soul of our School and I thank her for all that she does to bring meaningful experiences to our students.

Junior School News - Mrs Shirley Steel

Celebration of the Arts!

The past week has been a celebration of The Arts, which kicked off with an outstanding display of artworks and entertainment in the Keith Lindbeck Centre.  Across the week there have been music performances by our students and visiting performers, plus an ‘artist’ dress up day at Calista.  Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Arts Celebration!

Staff Farewells and Returns

This week we farewelled our Junior School Art teacher, Mrs Marnie McIlrath.  We thank Marnie for the wonderful work she has done with our PCACS students and wish her well for the future.  Next term we welcome back Mrs Natalie Gonsalves from her Parental Leave.

I sincerely thank Mrs Nicky Jones for ably stepping in as Acting Director at Calista while Mrs Donna Farmer has been on Long Service Leave this term. Next term Nicky will be on Long Service Leave and we welcome back Donna to the Director role at Calista.  We wish Nicky a restful and enjoyable period of leave!

We thank Mrs Emma Groth for her work in Kindy this term and look forward to welcoming back Mrs Kym Pattiselanno.  We also look forward to welcoming back Mrs Kylie Whittleton from her Long Service Leave.

Future Engineers – Block Projects

On Thursday the students of the entire Calista Campus were presented with a variety of construction challenges; all to be completed by using blocks and other construction materials called ‘loose parts’.  The students worked in small groups on various projects.  The level of communication and collaboration was astounding!  There was a strong focus on design, problem solving and team work. The finished products were very impressive too!

Campfire Skills Development – Year 4

Last week the Year 4 students took their learning outdoors to the fire pits.  During the lesson they learned about fire safety, campfire cooking, how to keep a campfire alight and how to use a fire-striker instead of a match.  The campfire lesson has prepared them well for the upcoming sleepover next term when they will be using the fire pits again.

Term Wrap-Up

Term 3 has been a wonderful term; one of many events ranging from Cultural, Sporting and The Arts.  The students and staff have worked very hard, so I encourage them to enjoy some downtime over the holidays, as well as plenty of fresh air and exercise in the outdoors.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday break and I look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 4

God bless!

A Joyful Term 3

Term 3 has certainly been packed with so many events and so many learning experiences.  At Peter Carnley Anglican Community School we understand the importance of health, wellbeing and spiritual growth for a positive view on the world and hope for a better future. Active learning, nature play, positive behaviour expectations, strong relationships and pastoral care are many of the ways we grow our students to be ready for the world around them.  We have been blessed with the diverse and rich opportunities offered to both students and staff not only during this term but throughout the school year.  We truly are on a life giving journey!

Good Luck Year 12

As the clock runs down to end the school journey for our Year 12 students they have been preparing their applications for the next phase of their lives, university, TAFE, work or perhaps some time to regroup before taking that next big step.  Exciting times ahead for each of them.

Early in Term 4 we will farewell our Year 12 students at a Valedictory School Assembly and a Valedictory Eucharist and Dinner.  These events mark proud moments in their lives marking the end of a chapter and the start of a new one.

Year 12 Trial ATAR Examinations

The Year 12 ATAR Trial Examinations will commence on Friday 4 October and finish on Friday 11 October.  We extend our best wishes to each student.

Rest and Recreation

I wish all students and their families a restful break and thank them for their contributions throughout this term.  A special thanks to the Senior School staff who have given so generously to each student to be the best version of them self.

God Bless you all.

Music News - Flamingo Strings

On Monday 23 September the Year 2-6 students were treated to a performance by Perth’s newest education String Ensemble – Flamingo Strings.  The Show, 'Listen To This!', was all about fun, emotion and storytelling through the medium of music. Anna, Theresa, Rachel and Alix performed original music composed especially for the quartet as well as great classics like the Four Seasons by Vivaldi.  The students used their ears and eyes to feel and experience the many sensations a live musical performance can conjure. The show incorporated discussion and demonstration of different elements of music, including tempo, dynamics, rhythm, string playing technique and timbre.  At the end of the concert, the students were given the opportunity to ask Flamingo Strings questions about the concert, the music and the joy of learning an instrument.

Music News - A Night on Broadway

On Monday 23 September the music students transported the Calista auditorium to the theatre district of New York, where dreams are made and broken.  'A Night On Broadway' featured performances by students from Year 2 to Year 12 performing songs from Musicals including Matilda, Les Miserables, Hairspray, Rent and Mary Poppins.  The evening opened with a stunning performance by the Senior Band who played the title song from the Disney Musical, Beauty and the Beast.  The Peter Carnley ACS students were joined by two special guests from the Australian Performing Arts Academy, Ethan Churchill and Maddy Lekias, who each performed a solo as well as the duet 'Suddenly Seymour' from the rock musical thriller Little Shop of Horrors.  Our own vocalists were also featured on the evening with solos by Sophie Hall (Year 8), Audrey Sullivan(Year 10) and Cassandra Palermo (Year 10).  The evening was expertly compered by Performing Arts Captain, Caelen Browning, assisted by Year 11 musicians - Micheal Carroll, Faith Clowry and Jack Opie.  The evening culminated with all choir members from Year 2 – 12 joining our special guests on stage for a performance of 'I Still Call Australia Home' from the musical The Boy From Oz.  Congratulations to all the students involved in the evening.  Thank you to all the staff, parents, friends and community members who attended the concert.

Music News - Meet the Instruments

As a part of Arts Week, our ELC students were visited by the Senior Band where they were introduced to the Instruments of the Orchestra.  Our Senior musicians demonstrated their instruments capabilities allowing our young musicians to explore the many timbres available to a composer.  Band members performed a number of pieces together as well as solos and duets with lots of opportunities for the audience to join in singing and dancing.  Some students even got the opportunity to conduct.  If you would like more information about learning an instrument at Peter Carnley ACS or about one of the many ensembles offered, please email music@pcacs.wa.edu.au

2019 Netball Season comes to an end

Well that's a wrap for the 2019 Winter Season.

On Saturday 21 September we had two teams playing in the Grand Final. Our U/12 Meteors were first up on the day, unfortunately after a hard fought match we lost in the last quarter. The girls played a great game and I am so proud of them all.

Next up was the Open 3 Comets who came out on top to win by six goals. Fantastic effort with only seven players.

Congratulations go to Lona Lokosang who took out MVP of the match. This is chosen by the life members of RDNA.

Well done to all players who went out each week and played their best, listened to their coaches and learnt some skills and great sportsmanship. Thank you to all the coaches and managers who worked hard at training and at the games for our children to play. Thank you to the umpires who gave up their Saturdays to not only umpire our club but stepped up to umpire other clubs also. In total these girls umpired twenty four other teams from other clubs and some clubs even asked for our girls. Thank you to parents, grandparents and friends who came to cheer on the girls each week. Have a well earned rest and we will see some of you in the spring season and hopefully next year too.

Mrs Kylie Trent
